Re: Bennachie brewery new build
Thanks Befuggled. I had been thinking about PCB lacquer but not did any tests yet. Adm, weldings easy just takes a bit of practice and an understanding of what you are doing, this isn't coded stuff i am doing! Sneak onto ebay buy a stick welder then tell SWMBO that its too late now so you've got to go practice to make the outlay back!
Go on go on go on.

that is looking so kewl
Reading your post today has given me the impetus to go down the shed and finish a few bits off as I have been doing the "Stand and look at something for a long time at different angles, whilst toying with 3 or 4 ways of completing the task and not actually doing anything, but feeling good about trying to resolve the issue, then having a go off for more design and thought and then getting completely side tracked and having to rethink the whole Idea or not knowing what this or that measurement was"
Your 1st brew will this be someone else's recipe scaled up or will you decide as you have designed and built your setup go the same way and enjoy the TOTAL success of your own recipe on your own system?
Again keep the pics comming and I like the fact that you have not gone 100% SS.

Re: Bennachie brewery new build
PROCRASTINATION, mostly a male disease and must be squashed at the 1st signs. An excellent diagnosis of the symptoms can be read below. I've had it a few times myself so recognise it for what it is! 1st brew is going to be my Blonde and Spicy. A bit like B&T but not really. The non stainless is driven by 'bang for buck' philosophy. Kettle had to be stainless as i am a big fan of gas for heating. Thanks for the comments guys. Anybody out there feels like giving the system a right good slagging feel free! The more i hear the better the end product will be.

Can you say 'pigs on the wing'. Will view and understand your thread in its entirety when the last of the Guiness is gone from my system. Looks nice and liking the counterflow chiller on page 2.
Re: Bennachie brewery new build
Had a proper comedy moment. Copper piping in the overback and mash tun. All going well so decided to fill overback to flush through and then fill to full(60 ltrs) to see the flowrate at the sparge wand. Filled overback(80 ltrs) no problem, messing about cleaning up before trying sparge flow and WOOOSSHHHHH i am suddenly soaked from the knees down and something has bounced off my back! The overback mounting frame sheared off the wall.
Turns out the fixings i used were a bit pish! Lucky in a way as no injury and only a few bent pipes to worry about, oh yeah and i think i've totalled my camera(it was caught in the flood that washed across the garage). On the upside my Speck pumps arrived this afternoon and my garage floor is very clean!
A picture of how it doesn't look any more....

Off down to Glasgow in the morning for a couple of days. Think i'll chill for a bit and get some BIG anchor bolts/fixing at the beginning of next week and go again.

Re: Bennachie brewery new build
Lucky escape pants!
I hope the camera was a cheapy or well insured...
When you straighten out your pipes, don't bother with Rustins, or at least put several coats on.
The Hycote seems to be faring better but it would have been much better to take it all apart, give it a good spray and oven it - excessive? me?
As a lot of mine is soldered that would have been tricky. I sprayed the Hycote into its lid and brush painted it on; it is very thin and several coats would have been better.
I can see that I am going to have to re-do it once I have worked out what I need to change.

Re: Bennachie brewery new build
Thanks Befuggled. The camera came ok with a couple of days drying out. I look forward to seeing your finished brewery, how's it all going for you?
Went down to Glasgow for a couple of days and couldn't resist taking a pump with me to get fittings, wiring etc while in my old areas! All went well and achieved everything i hoped to(apart from sight level tube for overback).
Arrived back this afternoon and started into wiring the pumps. I mounted the PSU in a box i bought from ebay last week and then hooked up the 3 switches(1 for each pump). The switches are single pole and interrupt neutral for pump on/off. I don't normally enjoy sparky work but this went ok. I tested one pump in fluid and it fairly belts through!
After that it was finish wiring all three then a quick test fire to see i had it all correct. After that i hooked up the 10mm isolation valves to the output sides of the pumps and cold welded the input side which terminates in a 15 mm copper compression fitting. Thanks to Befuggled and Brewzone in equal measures for their input on Befuggleds Speck pump thread. It made the job an absolute breeze. Hot sex brew building porn below(Over 18's only).
In the beginning

single pole switches soldered at an automotive alarm and tunes shop

quick test on 1 pump to make sure i did it right

Gratuitous wiring shots

I love this shot. 3 pumps and 3 switches and it works!

Re: Bennachie brewery new build
Three of the sexy little beasts all in a row!!!
Now, perhaps you should have mentioned how hard you had to hold them to stop them wanging all over the room with the turn-on belt
You might want to consider a bit of physical support for the copper pipe, one of mine cracked off - no big deal, the o-rings stopped it leaking and I had been a bit concerned as it connects directly to the boiler.
JB weld suggest roughening the surface, but I thought Stainless - unlikely, that's hard, but it does roughen nicely with a file. So thinking on, what you can roughen, you can tap....it's too big for 3/8" bsp, but I have a 1/2" bsp tap on order to give it a try.
It may be a while coz I've got to do some "proper" work

Re: Bennachie brewery new build
Unlucky on the proper work, got to do it though! The pump didn't jump much(only 1 in so far). The 1 i have in is the wort recirculation pump(pipe support noted for next 1 to go in). I rationalised the pipework so not true to drawing now. Main change is cold water feed is into overback and then gravity into copper. Saves me running a pump for that task. Only downside is that i will be sparging with cold water. I may fit a kettle element to the overback in time if my efficiency is overly affected.befuggled wrote:Three of the sexy little beasts all in a row!!!

Refitted the overback today and cracked on with a bit more piping. Got enough done to allow me a bit of a wet test. So far i have got overback, sparge wand, wort recirc pump and gravity feed of wort to copper tested and all ok. Will look at the copper to mash tun water pipe and copper to fermenter tomorrow. Great senses of relief when it all worked(so far)!
Really like the flow meter, damn good bit of kit and very accurate.

Hate to appear critical when you appear to be doing such a good job but.......
Should the sparge water be directed to run down the inner walls of the MT?

Re: Bennachie brewery new build
Flow meter, flow meter, I gotta hav a flow meter!!!
What is it? I could only find incoming mains water meters and/or petrol flow rate monitors.
I have been relying on the sight tubes on the vessels and I keep forgetting how far I've got!

Re: Bennachie brewery new build
Damn good point, the flow is variable and the picture is at full flow also there is no grain bed in the shot. Both these will affect the landing point of the sparge water.garwatts wrote:Hate to appear critical when you appear to be doing such a good job but.......
