Seems a lot of priming sugar??

Post by Spikesdad » Sat Oct 17, 2009 8:30 am

Hi all, please advise,

I have a coopers real ale kit in FV, and will be ready for botteling this coming week sometime, however, on reading instructions its advising 8gs sugar per liter - 23lts x8gs = 184g = 6.5oz - which sounds like a lot to me. :!: what would you beer gurus do?

And while your here, is this the way to do it?

When ready, I will rack into another FV add priming sugar, mix it gentally then bottle into pint bottles.

Thx in advance all

I would follow the instructions if you are bottling as coopers kits don't retain a good head if you bottle with the usual 85 grams, if you are kegging it though I would only use 85 grams.

Dissolve your priming sugar in about 100ml water and bring it to the boil. Leave it cool (it must be covered) whilst you clean your bottles. Put the cooled sugar solution into the 2nd FV and then transfer the beer across. The two will mix perfectly with no additional stirring needed.
Best wishes

That's more than twice the amount of sugar I would use.

Your bottles are likely to gush with that amount of priming!

Thank all for the replies, but with conflicting opinions, will it be a good idea to compromise, and say use 4.5 oz?

I always prime Coopers lager with 165grams of sugar and I've never had a gusher. Serve cool and it makes it fizzy like out of a can.
