Brewdog 77 Lager

Post by mysterio » Wed Nov 18, 2009 5:28 pm

I fancy giving this a shot with my yeast slurry from my next lager, I reckon it's one of the best lagers available in the UK. Infact I can think of only two decent ones, this and Schiehallion.

I emailed the brewery to see if I can get any info on it but let's see what we can come up with first

Here's what we have:

ABV:4.9%
OG:1046
IBU’s:35
Malts:Pale Malt, Caramalt, Munich Malt
Hops:Motoeka, Amarillo

Here's my guess at a recipe, any thoughts ? ?

That looks great. Not sure about the way that you gain the IBUs will be the same as Brewdogs. They use one of those plate chillers and a pump so mabye there are more hop additions, say at 15 mins for the late IBUs. Too bad I never got to see it made.

Do they cut the boil, add the hops, and chill immediately ? Or are the hops allowed to steep ?

Definately on the right track with Amarillo - thats the main hop taste/aroma in 77 imo

Steeping I think....

But in all honesty I can't remember. #-o

I think it would be poor form not to, they would lose a lot of possible hop aroma which is the promenant feture of a lot of brewdog beers. Mabye try a wee bit of Amarillo for flavour?

Also a quick consideration if you want to get the colour right. Brewdog get quite a bit of wort darkening due to the elements that they use. I don't think that 77 is 10ebc, think it is darker.

I don't buy that steeping looses hop aroma. If anything I think it pronounces both aroma and flavour.

Yeah I think you're right about the colour. Maybe a drop of light crystal to rectify that. Also some of their other literature says 1.049 OG which seems more like it.
