Maple Moon

Post by pas8280 » Wed Mar 17, 2010 10:10 pm

Hi all just had my nephew round for a little tasting session and he asked if i could make a clone of Joseph Holts Maple Moon as thats his all time favourite bottled beer ! its one of Holt's newer ones (for me anyway) in an effort for them to move with the times me thinks having looked over the road at what happened to Boddingtons they are trying to reach the bigger market. Anyway i digress does anyone have a trusted recipe for this ???

Sorry i can't help too much here

here is a link.

http://www.joseph-holt.com/bottledbeers.asp#

it says on the home page that

" All beer colour is derived from blends of coloured malts and no caramel is used in any of our products. English hops are forward contracted up to four years ahead and harvested from the Midlands and Kent. they also say they use a hop back."

From this is sugest you are looking at standard pale , wheat and maybe darker ( black) malts for the job. As for hops i have no idea. Maybe you could just mail them and ask.

As long as you know the IBU and hops you will likely be able to make something similar....

It says subtle maple flavouring, so maybe some maple syrup in the secondary? Maple syrup is pretty pricey though. You could experiment with adding a small quantity to a taster of one of your ales to see how it effects the taste. According to Randy Mosher in Radical Brewing fenugreek is a cheap way of putting a maply taste into things and wikipedia seems to back this up (last bit under cuisine).

Sounds like you need to get a bottle or two to try :)
