I'm not sure diving straight into that calculator is the best way.
Start by reading through the Sticky posts at the top of the brewing liquor forum.
You need to know the total alkalinity of your water. Either email the water company and ask or uses Chris's excellent instructions and test it yourself.
Once you have that magic number, everything else follows!

In the interests of balance I'd just like to say that other font sizes are available.

Dont rely on the water company tell you the correct alk figure, get the Salifert test of ebay. use the other figures off of the water companys report and your good to go!

If you want a simpler calculator, theres one in 'the other place' ( http://tinyurl.com/338mt6p ) Grahams is fab but a little daunting!

Ive just been watching this

Removing Chlorine/Chloramines

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9kkrddfH4uE

if i was to just remove the chlorine from my tap water (for now ) would that leave me with water in the same ball park at buying water from the super market,
and what benifits would i be seeing from treating my water futher then that?

sorry if these are really daft questions, im just struggling to get my head round it all, ( plus it doesnt help being a thick c*nt )

Not sure if all other brands are useless. I bought a Nutrafin KH/GH* test kit from my local aquarium shop (because thats all they had) and have got on with it OK. Infact looking at the instructions posted for the Safilert kit, this one seems a bit easier to use. The results also read out as mg/l CaCO3 so no conversion of them is required.

That said, given the choice it might make sense to go with Safilert if its in stock at your preferred suppler, as more people on here have verified its pukka.

*KH = alkalinity, GH = total hardness. Must be aquarium-speak or something. There are two different tests included in the kit, one for each.

Using the test sample is a good way to check your technique is good too.
