You could weigh it out on digital scales or alternatively measure out a tsp into 4 litres (after all it costs less than £3 for 500ml, about 6p as tsp).

Where can I get it for that price.

I've just been round to the local chemist.
They have a 5ml spray for £2.50.
250 ml 4% at £16
500 ml 10% Alcohol solution for £18

My local pharmacy say they can't get it

Boots say they can get it for £3 but there computer was playing up and they don't know if they can order it.

I've just tried another and they didn't have a clue what I was talking about but they rang their supplier and they can get a Betadine 500ml bottle for £3.
It was too much like hard work trying to find the details so I just hope it's the right one.

Well I have started using mine today. It's the first time I've used a steriliser with a smell. Am I right in using 1.25ml per litre for no rinse?

Yup, I just measure out approx 1/3 tsp/L, not scientific at all but as a tsp is approx 5ml then, well you can see the maths

Contact time - I leave for a minute as a minimum other times I let things soak for some time. Plastic is supposed to get stained after long exposure but I've only noticed that slightly in some PVC tubing I left in for an hour or so. And they're obviously still usable

Pretty much, yes.

Sterilising is tricky in a domestic situation - we don't have autoclaves and filtered air supplies etc. Sanitising is basically reducing the nasties until they are so low in number that the yeasts easily win. Generally yeasts are antisocial sods to other bugs. They make the beer more acidic and strip all the oxygen out. There's only a few bugs that survive those environments. Generally those ones don't kill you - they make your beer taste iffy.

Just to add that Videne comes in a few different flavours. You want the antiseptic solution version.

Or better still, if you want it to actually kill bugs, is to get a proper commercial iodophor, like the Brupaks stuff, not some mamsey-pamsey hand-wash stuff that is mild enough to not damage skin or open wounds and is full of lanolin and glycerine to keep your hands soft and supple. The best way to use Videne is to hope the bugs can read and show them the label - that might just frighten them off if they are not very bright.
