Help - Ballistic Yeast!

Post by Bondelle » Sat Aug 28, 2010 8:18 am

Hello all,

Ok, my first Brew Day (see here) is worrying me a bit now regarding the yeast. It has really ‘taken off’ and I am unsure what to do, if anything. The yeast has climbed all the way to the top of the FV and up through the airlock – it actually blew the top off.

Here is a picture of it this morning:

Should I remove the top of the FV, scrape off some of the yeast, clean and sanitise the top + airlock, and then replace top, or something else?

Bit worried

Thanks in advance

Mark.

that looks very familiar, i spent all day yesterday cleaning different airlocks as they got clogged up and the pressure almost lifted the lid off my fermenting bucket, i don't now if i was right but it seemed like the only thing i could do to prevent a lot of mess in my dining room.
it settled over night as the temp dropped and is all ok now.
what temp are you fermenting at?

Temperature is sitting between 20 and 22 degrees or so.

it could have something to do with the fresh yeast you got from the local brewery, i would just keep cleaning off the airlock thats what i did.others on here will have more experience with this and could well advise someing better

Yes Malc, that yeast was pretty spectacular! I had no idea how much to use so just put a dollop in and hoped for the best. At least I know it's working!

I will clean up everything and see what happens - like you say, someone else might be experienced in what to do here and post some advise :)

Just clear the airlock out, and let it get on with it - it'll usually calm down a bit in three or so days after pitching.

Yeah, seems to be more settled now :) Thanks all.

I just had Windsor do the same thing in an oatmeal stout I have brewed for bonfire night.

I came home from work yesterday to find it had escaped in pretty spectacular fashion from the airlock :o

Mind you, it did go from 1048 to 1012 in 2.5 days 8)

Yup - that's the way Windsor tends to work for me too. Goes off like the clappers, and then takes a year to drop out of suspension...
