what can i expect?

Post by Deebee » Tue Sep 28, 2010 7:59 pm

hi all.
I an just collecting my thoughts in regard to doing 2 brews from one mash.
The idea is to use12 kg pale and 500g each of crystal and wheat.
First runnings will be of around 20 litres and i would hope to sparge out 5 more litres to get 25 l pre boil. Og would be around 1120 all being well. I would then water back to my final amount and desired og.
Obviously there would be a lot more goodies in the malt, so i would sparge out the grains in order to get a smaller beer. Is there anyway of working out roughly how much i can get pre boil before runnings are too weak. I an working on about 75 % for the last one. The first will be heavilly hopped with columbus and cascade, the second all english hops.
Thanks for reading.

thanks for that Tony.
I am maybe fortunate position in that i have 2 mt. One holds 24 litres and the other 36.
I an boost thinking it would be a good idea to run the first runnings from one into the other to max out efficiency. Any thoughts?
If not them i will split the grain between the 2 and can ensure i have the planned amount of water for pre boil volume.
I'll have a look on beersmith later and check what 20 l post boil will give me he i drop the grain to 10 kilo.
Am thinking of making sometim along the lines of an american barley wind from the big beer and an ipa from the small one using only ekg. If i have enough pale malt i'll do the mash just with pale and about 10% wheat.
I'd appreciate peoples thoughts. I don.t mind experimenting, but this could be an expensive one to mess up.
Thanks all.
