AG #06 - Mysterio's SNPA Clone

Post by Gricey » Sun Oct 03, 2010 7:28 pm

Going for a SNPA today, a nice pale ale of sensible ABV. Used Mysterio's recipe so nothing special from my side.

Brew Length 23L
5450g Lager malt
450g Light crystal
30g Northern Brewer @ 60m
1tsp rehydrated protafloc @ 15m
30g Cascades @ 10m
70g Cascades @ 0m, steep for 20 mins

60m mash @ 66ºC, 60m boil (split across my 25L boiler and a 3L saucepan!)
2 batch sparges of 14.5L collected
Rehydrated US05 yeast, 19ºC Ferment

It's chilling down now, nothing gone too wrong. Noticed that there was a small ring of liquid on the floor around the base of my kettle, hopefully not bad tidings coming...

Looking good. That's a professional looking setup you've got there - especially the chiller. I thought my eyes were going funny with the shape of that bucket though :)

Great stuff. Hope the recipe works well for you. Plenty of cascade, hard to go wrong.

Looked good, wanted a SNPA, so away I went.

Hit 1.052 OG, only one point off yours.

Here it is:

Obviously it doesn't use Perle or Magnum as the brewery does but the result was so close I don't feel any need to change it. Also I recommend using WLP001 and keeping it cool during the ferment.

Hi Mysterio!

Quick response there - much appreciated!

Your comments are noted... I may use a little of the Centennial that I have in the freezer I know it will turn out different, but by using the same grain bill I should get the colour right :D

Many thanks!

I see you like your Hendersons relish!

I buy a few bottles everytime I go back to see the folks in Sheffield...

Fish & Chips (with Mushy peas) just aren't the same without it!

:D

Keep us posted on how your brew ferments/turns out...

Hendy's = best condiment ever!

Mysterio, I've gone for a 19°C ferment, normally do 20 for US05/WLP001. That do?

Yeah, that's fine. The ferment temp and liquid vs dried is just fine tuning.

looks good man. What fittings are you using to attach the copper pipe to your SS chiller?

A Mys recipe is likely to work out well! Has for me in the past.

What a ball ache that chiller was.

Love the chiller but it let a lot of water into my wort the first few times (didnt like hoseclips on 10mm braided pvc hose), I might move this to a HERMS coil later and make a copper one for my wort chiller. The SS one is from Hamstead Brewing.

ImageSS chiller fittings by The Grice is Right, on Flickr

It's 10mm SS pipe, the fitting goes:

10mm SS -> 10 to 15mm compression reducer->smallest bit of 15mm pipe i could get away with->15mm compression elbow->15mm pipe (to clear the rim of my boiler!)->15mm compression to 1/2" tap connector->brass hose fitting (screwfix website).

Lessons learned, I should buy a blowtorch and learn to solder!
