Looks like a few people have experimented with big and little beers from the same mash.
I have a long period away from home in the not too distant future meaning that ater february i will not be able to brew until the summer. So i thought that i would try and get some supplies stocked up.
my thoughts are to do a double brew from one mash.
here is the plan ( initially)
I'm basing this on only 70% efficiency as i understand that higher gravity worts tend tu get lower efficiency.
Either way:-
BIG BREW 15 litres
8000g pale
750g torri wheat
50g columbus (16%) 60 mins
20 g columbus at 15
35 cascade ( 6.3) at 5
15 g columbus at 5
this should give me a big beer of:-
OG 1122
IBU 97
ABV 12.5
the plan is to make this a no sparge brew. I intend to divide the grist between the 2 MT i have and have full amount of water ( 28 litres) in them. Tis means that i will in effect have a no sparge method with high quality wort. In essence something this big is not something i would drik, but the idea is to then water this back to around the 8.5% mark.
Once the boil is on i intend to fill the 2 mt with around 10 litres each ( making a run off of 20 litres) and take a gravity of it, and the remains in the MT. I can then consider what i will do, either leave it at 20 litres, or maybe keep sparging to a lower gravity( and more beer:))
hopping could be interesteing, but i think i will mix the second batch well and take a gravity as the boiler is switched on, then dr a recipe in beersmith to work out the hops.
My gut feeling tells me this will either be target and goldings, or just EKG for an IPA.
I intend to ferment both with nottingham as i am a fan of the yeast.
I have never used columbus before but understand from Borischarlton that it is a fantastic hop.
in addition i have centennial and aroura if these are of interest.
Tweaks etc welcomed.
thanks!

Boldy going where no man.. etc.
I'm sure I've heard of other people doing this - they must just be shy.

I wish I could help but I've never used centennial and the only partigyle I ever tried ended up with both beers going down the pan (stuck at 1050, and infection respectively). I'm pretty sure there are some brewdays and threads on this approach tucked away somewhere on Jims. I think Steve Flack posted a link to a partigyle excel sheet somewhere. Best of luck and let us know how it goes.
