Black Sheep Best Bitter
Black Sheep Best Bitter
Anyone have a recipe? Hardest part is the fermentation of course. Couldn't believe seeing the squares in action over the summer. Very cool. Almost a perfect session pint..

Re: Black Sheep Best Bitter
EDIT: Recipe removed as I shouldn't have posted it. Sorry guys.
There is a recipe in BYOBRA
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Brew-Your-Briti ... 777&sr=8-1
I would give that a go for a start and tweak as you feel necessary.

Im not sure that you should be listing Grahams recipe. Maybe just point him the way to the book. No offence meant.

Good point! But on the odd occasion when a recipe has slipped out, from what Graham has said, he is not overly bothered ..................may be a bit different if someone posted the whole book on line!Normski wrote:Steve

I'm not sure you can claim copyright on an individual recipe anyway.

Steve, I think you forgot to add this emoticon to the end of your post:steve_flack wrote:I'm not sure you can claim copyright on an individual recipe anyway.

I have no problem with it being posted. Besides, the book is so bloody expensive on Amazon.com even I wouldn't buy it if I lived over there.Runwell-Steve wrote:Sorry guys, didn't realise I shouldn't have posted it, but now you mention it it seems obvious Doh!!

There is also the Riggwelter recipe described on The Brewing Network, except that the head brewer deliberately forgot to mention the sugar, as they usually do.

So, before I got a chance to look at the recipe too closely I did see it. I noticed that it had 3 different FWH. Then, an addition at 10min. Is that correct?
Funny that you mention the Brewing Network interview. I just listened to that yesterday, and remember the question about sugar. The brewer very proudly declared that of course there was no sugar or caramel! So, you're saying they do in fact add sugar?
I really should pick up the book. I own two previous versions, so just haven't gotten around to it I guess...

Yes, bitterness hopping is 50% Challenger, the other 50% comprising equal parts Fuggles and Golding. Most of the alpha comes from the challenger.jim williams wrote:Thanks, Graham. I appreciate that!

Fuggles at 10 minutes to go.
The question was (from memory): "Are there any sugars or caramel?", but the brewer stumbled at that point and said lots of NOs, and then qualified it by saying "No caramel", which might be true. However, sugar is declared on the bottle label, much to my relief because my published recipe for Riggwelter includes sugar.jim williams wrote: Funny that you mention the Brewing Network interview. Re: Black Sheep Best Bitter
I think your recollection is spot on, that said the BN guys reckoned that they cloned it without using any sugar anyway.
Re: Black Sheep Best Bitter
Surprised to see the bitterness coming from FWH exclusively. I didn't think that was a technique used in British brewing much. That helps alot. Thanks again.Graham wrote:Yes, bitterness hopping is 50% Challenger, the other 50% comprising equal parts Fuggles and Golding. Re: Black Sheep Best Bitter
Not sure that Black Sheep use what is euphemistically called First Wort Hopping. The bittering hops are probably added at 'copper up', that is, when the wort comes to the boil. The aroma hops are probably laid on the hop-back plates before casting out the copper onto them. Whatever they did with Riggwelter, they will do the same with the Best Bitter. You might get some clues from the Riggwelter podcast.jim williams wrote:Surprised to see the bitterness coming from FWH exclusively. I didn't think that was a technique used in British brewing much. Are these recipes near perfect with info gained from head brewers or do you make a knowledgeable guess?Graham wrote:I have no problem with it being posted. Not been flippant because I was taught most of what I know from your books, and Dave Line too..God bless him.
