Introducing: The Pharsical Phemto Brewairy

Post by befuggled » Tue Jul 06, 2010 6:10 pm

The Pharsical Peeko Brewairy was put together as a permanent setup, in a purpose built, tiled room with little consideration to cost - just maximum flexibility. This could only be done because of: age, mortgage paid off, dual income, no kids or pets, no interest in flash cars etc, understanding wife....
(I still think that the payback over pub and supermarket beer will be 2-3 years :D )

Over the past few months I have been reading posts like Adm etc's 120l  , Haz66's 200l =D> , Scooby's magnificent shininess 8) and so on - so I started to think twee.

My Peeko Brewairy is staying at a very steady 21C+/-1C - not bad for fermenting, until I brew. Then it shoots up to 28C+, even with the monster tangential fan.
So, for a couple of months, I am thinking about brewing outside the brewairy and twee.
Thanks to the likes of Leewink, Rogerm, Rimski and Koomber some interesting low cost options have been spotted.

So to the strains of Floyd's Brain Damage ---
I have come up with a Lidul brewery (sorry.... )
It is just the right size for a corny full and a bottle or two.
It still lets me underlet, RIMS, have recirculation wort cooling and is fixed in the sense of "together" but easily moved.
It can do step mashes for lager etc and can increase the mash tun to 77C for mashout. You could use gravity fed fly sparging, but I will probably stick with batch.

It is also completely unnecessary for making excellent beer but yet another challenge and good for a laugh    .

Image
I have some Armaflex which I will probably use to lag all three vessels later.

The "false bottom" for the mash tun, it should leave plenty of room for the wort to move while being heated - this should avoid hot spots and singed grist:

The mash tun with the re-circulation/sparge manifold:

This shows the re-circulation return pipe which gives a whirlpool (with these pumps, this is best described as pathetic, but whorsis and coarsis...). It also shows one of the two hop filters which fit down into the lowest part of the vessel:
Image

The CF plate cooler is from the Peeko Brewairy when I upgraded to a 50 plate. I am considering a different cooler, also external but rather different....
Image

The two 10mm JG straight connectors allow:
1a) Underlet from HLT into mash tun, backwards through the pump
1b) RIMS
1c) Pump into boiler, via the re-circulation pipe or hung over the edge

2a) Re-circulate cooled wort (the pump is on the outlet of the cooler as advised by Solarproject)
2b) Gravity or pump boiler to FV.

The frame is "speedframe" which I had left over from something else - it is not a sensible solution if you have to buy it! I put a back on it in case I wanted to hang anything from it, but it makes it easier to move as well.

Nurse, nurse, I'll have my pills now please........

Crikey, you've been quietly beavering away. It may be on the lidl side ( :-) ) but seems quite sophisticated none the less - I can see this being perfect for special beers and recipe experiments. All very swish and neat looking too (makes my cylinder HLT look like a crude cousin from the back of beyond!).

Keep us posted on how it works out!

Cheers

Hi Beerkiss,
Please see viewtopic.php?f=24&t=34064 where I did the first brew.
I have added some armaflex round the mash tun since and the PID holds it to +/- 0.1C.
To be honest, it has done more Sous Vide than brewing! - I have mainly been using my larger system recently.
(The phemto is actually doing a half shoulder of lamb as I type, while the peeko system does 55L of KiwIPA...)

Hi Jubby!

Anything for a laugh eh?
I have a Porter and a Mr Hadleys still looking at me with "best after Nov" on them - self control or what?
I have a few IPAs waiting to wing their way in your direction, none of them ready yet, but one or two might be ok for xmas.
I am also planning a Goldings only, sort of inspired by numbers 40,41 and 42 (1.2Kg in 50L), should be next week, so I will probably wait until that is in the bottle before sending a selection.
I have also been inspired by Scooby and Aleman to order a bottling gun, so I should be able to get some of the original "Serious" out of the corny without too much damage - but that will be next March!

Funny you should mention those, I am working away for the next few weeks so i got a bottle of each from my secret beer cupboard and put them in the beer fridge for sampling later. I will probably sample them when i get back too :D

The IPA lineup looks good, especially the all Goldings. Pretty much the same as my East India IPA.......1/2 kilo in 23 litres + 100g dry hop, super beer.

I'm not keen on bottled beers, but Scooby kindly sent me a Jaipur clone that was bottled with one of those guns and i thought that was an outstanding beer. Obviously, that's mostly down to scooby's craftsmanship, but the conditioning was spot on. Needless to say.......i will be getting one of those too.

Sorry Jubby, that should have read Fuggles only, most similar to Export XX (1864) Whitbreads (No 40).
Very similar level of hopping to yours but OG around 86 - aiming for something like the "Old Ales" quoted in Nos 41 and 42.
And yes, very much inspired by your thread and the superb result :D

It might well end up as Fuggles and Goldings though because I have a job lot of Goldings.

Ouch! - That's my arm you're twisting =P~
I am/was waiting 'til December!
Just come in from the KiwIPA and have put 19Kg of PM into the tun for tomorrow.
I think it will be 600gms Fuggles, 400gms WGV and 200gms Goldings, then 200gms Goldings dry.
But it might change by about 10:00 am
Whatever, should be ok by xmas 2011 [-o<

I reckon they are ready. they both taste good to me, but far too much gas. I only primed with the smallest amount of sugar, but it's produced loads of C02. Next time i won't prime. Pour into a couple of glasses from a decent height to knock the gas out first.
