Untitled Beer Number 8
Untitled Beer Number 8
Firstly, if anyone can think of a better name for it than "Untitled Beer Number 8", I'd appreciate it. Thanks to a very generous hop swap, I'm doing a single hop with Northdown and read somewhere that it is suited to darker, heavier beers. With this in mind, and an almost complete lack of experience in making a beer recipe, I came up with this:
Final Volume: 23 Litres
Original Gravity: 1.055
Final Gravity: 1.013
Alcohol Content: 5.4% ABV
Bitterness: 37 EBU
Colour: 38 EBC
Pale Malt (5 EBC): 5100 grams - 90.5%
Crystal Malt (130 EBC): 420 grams - 7.5%
Roasted Barley (1350 EBC): 26 grams - 0.5%
Torrefied Wheat (4 EBC): 90 grams - 1.6%
Northdown Whole (AA 8.3 %) 90 mins: 18 grams - 41.5%
Northdown Whole (AA 8.3 %) 30 mins: 24 grams - 39.8%
Northdown Whole (AA 8.3 %) 10 mins: 24 grams - 18.8%
Northdown Whole (AA 8.3 %) 0 mins: 20 grams - 0%
Is it worth splitting the flavouring into 30 minute and 10 minute additions or is lobbing them all in at 30 minutes OK? I've never used Northdown before so I'd like to get the full flavour coming out of it. Any suggestions welcome, ta.

Never used Northdown, but if you're looking for a dark beer you need to up you're dark malts.
That will be more of a red ale.
I brew a similar ale with challanger/ EKG and Target hops and ssome Munich added to the grain bill.
Very nice pint but red not dark and I make a bigger roast barley addition than you have

Cheers Spud. I'll up the roasted to 1%. I've also got some chocolate malt, but I don't really like the flavour that much, although I suppose the roasted barley is going to be pretty similar. I guess I'll find out in a month or two.

Sounds good, you'll enjoy the Northdown. Not totally dissimilar to one I brewed http://pdtnc.wordpress.com/2010/05/08/a ... hern-blue/

Excellent. How did that brew turn out? What sort of flavours did the Northdown give it?pdtnc wrote:Sounds good, you'll enjoy the Northdown. Not totally dissimilar to one I brewed http://pdtnc.wordpress.com/2010/05/08/a ... hern-blue/

Looks good as is Naich...
I know that northdown work well in darker beers but it is also used in a number of pale brews including IPA's I like its 'classic english' aroma/flavour properties
Its also fairly well blessed in the AA dept. too!
Let us know how you get on...
Pdnc's brew looks good too!

Thanks for the advice chaps. I'm really looking forward to doing this one this weekend, despite the early start. According to the EBC chart on Wikipedia, the beer colour is going to be #5D341A. I think I might call it that

Re: Untitled Beer Number 8
You're going to name it after a hex colour? http://www.color-hex.com/color/5d341a
Re: Untitled Beer Number 8
Yeah, I reckon so. Embrace the inner geek and all that
That way, when people ask me why I call it that I can tell them it's the RGB hex code for the colour the beer is and watch their eyes glaze over as they instantly lose interest
Sometimes I think I'm a bit odd.

Re: Untitled Beer Number 8
Or maybe it could be <beer color="#5D341A" /> ? I'm not sure how deep this geek rabbit hole should go
