Whats your favourite BYOBRA recipe?

Post by Spud395 » Thu Jan 27, 2011 9:50 pm

Got the book today, Amozon delayed Christmas pressy  .
Now being Irish I've no idea what any of the beer taste like on cask and only get a few here in bottles.
I do like a good English ale with some of my favourites coming from Fullers, but to be honest I've not had much variety.
I know this will be personal choice and very subjective, but if you were to pick one or a few recipes from this book what would they be?
I've yet to brew from someone else's recipe  but will do at least one from this book

If you like fullers try London Pride, the Timothy Taylor Landlord is hard to beat, Worthington White Shield is extremely good as it Felinfoel Double Dragon to mention a few.

All my AG brews so far have been from BYOBRA. I started with the London Pride which was really, really nice although not much like the real thing because I used dried yeast (Nottingham).

The brew that people have most liked of mine was Guinness Extra Stout. Maybe that's because the water's very alkaline and I didn't treat it, but either way it was blooming gorgeous. Have Worthington White Shield conditioning in bottles now and that too is blooming gorgeous! Hopback Summer Lighting was good too, although best on a warm summer's day so I might do it again in a few months.

All the recipes I've tried have been spot on, but I've upped the hop and grain additions a bit (I extract brew). This may be to do with my ingredients not being exactly what GW used; my hops have quite low AA for example. Or it could just be my ruined taste buds.
The Summer Lightning is good but could do with more steeped hops to get more of a hop hit. I've got a Deuchar's IPA conditioning that looks like an absolute belter and probably won't last long. I killed a Black Sheep that, under the sherry fug, was a very decent beer trying to claw its way out.
To give you an idea of the different quantities, I use the hop quota for the 19l batch but I only make 12l. I think the Exmoor Ale could've done with a bit of that, but it's still a fine thirst quencher.
The trouble is picking one to do, to be honest. I change my mind every five minutes.

Have done the Guiness extra and London Pride from the book, both awesome! I'm in the same boat as DaveyT, too many to choose from!! Must have read the book back to front a hundred times, every time I pick one I get distracted by other recipes, will get round to them eventually I guess!

I really like the Exe Valley Dobs Best Bitter. I still have 5 bottles getting on for a year old now. I'll be brewing a batch again soon but replacing the fuggles with Glacier and probably adding Glacier for the last 10 minutes of the boil too (not sure how it will turn out but I enjoy a little bit of experimentation).

Also the Exe Valley shares the same malt bill and quantities as Archers Best and Big Lamp Bitter meaning these are on my list of beers to try.

I'm also a big fan of the Salem Porter recipe. That goes down a treat.

No one has recommended any of the Mild's. I like the Highgate mild but lots of people rave on about the Sarah Hughes Ruby. As Davy T said, most of the recipes are winners.

My favorite so far Hop Back Summer Lightning, I noticed that Morrisons have bottle conditioned Summer Lighting in our local store, I think I will get my self a couple and harvest the yeast for my next brew.

I've yet to brew AG but have been told all Graham's recipes are good brews. The other day I was able to compare two recipes from Graham's 1993 edition of the book with some contemporaneous original recipes from the brewery itself. I have to say, he had the ingredients exactly, was almost spot-on with quantities and had only one error on hop variety. On this evidence, they are not only good brews but Graham can also reproduce commercial brews quite accurately - either through v good contacts in the breweries or his own skill as a brewer.

Fullers ESB has got to be in the top 10 using the recipe from GW,s book, however now i,ve brewed quite a few from the book i find theres a few simple things missing in the recipes like grains/additives to aid head retention etc and depending on taste whacking in aroma hops.
If you tie a piece of buttered toast to a cats back and drop it from a building, it hovers just above the ground rotaing slowly.

The Cameron's Castle Eden Ale is lovely (make sure you check the alphas on you Target hops though, as mine turned out to be considerably higher).

The Theakston Old Peculier and Timmy Taylor Landlord are superb also. The only ones I wouldnt really bother with again (and I must have done 15 brews from the book) are, ironically the Guinness and the Caledonian Porter.

Hop back SL, white shield, london pride, london porter. My favourite.... Young's special ale.

Why is the porter/stout section so paltry? Sort it out Graham for the 4th ed!! (please!)
