I sterilise mine along with my bottles with videne solution and tend to spray my capper too. I use this one http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bench-Crown-C ... 500wt_1202 as it works with all bottles inc my beloved 40 odd Hob goblin collection ;-)

I've found this out too. Lever type cappers struggle with Hobgoblin bottles.

I usually boil my caps in water just before using them, does the job as well.

Would love a larger capper to do Leffe bottles I know they make them but £130 is too much, just looked and see you can get a add on for the above capper, when I last looked a few years ago they were £££££££££££

I had one many years ago when i first tried brewing kits, it had two sizes of pressing cups/heads with it but never ever used the larger one. it wouldn't have been expensive then coz i'm a tight wad ;) There was a great HB shop in Dunfermline, Fife back then, not sure but I think it was Glenbrew as in Glasgow and that is a great little shop.

Dunno where all my gear went, Mum would have binned anything Dad didn't claim for the greenhouse LOL
The one I linked in my last post is what I am using now, the cup does screw off but I don't know if other ones are available.

I am a Videne man too, for my last 3 brews and I just spray my bottles then empty the used solution over the caps and if there isn't quite enough I pour a little out of the sprayer and cover them.

Then, being the dominant man that I am, I command the memashib to cap them for me.
(Actually I plead with her to be allowed to brew then beg her for help)

Tramorak, your reduced size font doesn't hide the truth from us. :D

I chose the Videne after reading much of the debate here and elsewhere and realising that it is a very effective sanitiser at a great price. tho I still use the trusty old bleach from time to time. and yes my lids get a quick rinse the soaked in the solution used for the keg and bottles.

I feel very luck as to herindoors tho, I have two FV's on my dressing table atm and a kegerator and gas bottle in the kitchen, the loft is littered with bottles and gear and she never complains bless her :D

I bought a 20x10 sectional garage which is to be my brewery in 2012 Yabadabadoooooo!!!!

P.S She is more than competent in the art of capping too ;)

To be completely honest she loves her beer too and is always completely happy for me to be brewing. She is also far better at capping than me, as I tend to be too forcefull and have smashed a few bottle tops. (I am hoping that Santa will bring me a bench capper).

She is pretty keen on me going the AG route, if we ever move to a place that would accommodate it. I often tell her I am reading up but I generally know that I am pretty clueless on it, as I suspect does she.

Superb, i hope santa is good to you then as the bench capper was the best money spent as far as bottling is concerned. As for ag I dont know if i ever will what with continental shifts and caravan season, oh well we see what the future holds after the garage is built ;-)

Same here.

I dump all the crowncorks I'll need plus a few spares in a jar of VWP solution, stir it up a few times, then rinse thoroughly. Then I keep them under water (I trust my local tapwater) until capping time.
I find the lever capper hard work, and broke a bottle (Wychwood) with it, so currently use the ultra-simple whack-it-with-a-mallet capper. I use the lever capper afterwards to make sure they're tight.
With the whack-it capper, I make sure there's something under the bottles that'll give a bit, but not too much, and I always use a rubber mallet. No problems so far, except getting the damn thing off again!

+1. In a pint glass for me. Leave for 20 mins whilst I prime the FV. Rinse three times. Easy.
