A winter Lager

Post by quixoticgeek » Sat Dec 10, 2011 6:05 pm

Whilst at the home brew shop today to stock up on grain, I got myself 5kg of lager malt. I now find myself pondering lager recipes. I want to make a simple lager that I can lager properly while the weather is cold.

Does anyone have any recipe suggestions?

What kind of lager do you like to drink?
100% lager malt, 30 IBUs of Mt. Hood hops and Saflager yeast is about as simple as you can get.
I'm just here for the beer.

This is what I do....

5kgs Pilsner Malt
50g Saaz @90mins
1 Protofloc @30mins
25g Saaz @15mins
25g Saaz @0mins
Steep for 1hr

Yeast is Brewlabs Pils or Whitelabs / Wyeast made into a 1ltr starter

What brew length is that based on? 5 gallons?

When you say Steep, do you mean leave the hops in there for an hour before you start the cooling?

Sorry for the vague post J!

The brew length I aim for is 23ltrs and yep, just chuck the 0mins hops into the boiler, switch the heat off and leave it alone for an hour.
(I usually go and clean / sterilise my FV etc during this time)

Although, when I managed to cross thread the outside tap and couldn't get the wort chiller going I just put the boiler outside and left it overnight for the wort temp. to drop before transferring to the FV and chucking in the yeast the next day....this came out really good, nice and bitter but with an almost creamy, hoppy taste too.

Hope this helps Mate
