Simple Cheap and Tasty, Raspberryade
Re: Simple Cheap and Tasty, Raspberryade
i dont think you'll have any issues matey. i'm just a novice brewer myself, and I have one of these raspberry malarkies on the go too...i followed the recipe almost exactly, except I had to use 50g of light muscovado sugar instead of 400g white. I think you'll probably just come out with a slightly stronger brew than that 5.5% the recipe states. My understanding, is that yeast multiplies as the first part of the process...so even if you had only put in one teaspoon..it would replicate itself anyway to become more than that. I think you'll be fine.
Re: Simple Cheap and Tasty, Raspberryade
Ok thankyou! There's no bubbling as yet but I guess it'll take a couple of days to get going

Re: Simple Cheap and Tasty, Raspberryade
hello,
i put mine on on thursday with muntons gold yeast,
the krausen (or non-beer alternative which i don't know the word for) really is quite pathetic, it not even covering the whole of the surface of the fv and as of yet i have only heard the airlock go a couple of times, the lid does have a slight bulge though (it's in a 23l fv made to 12l).
Is this normal after 3 days?, i was kind of hoping it would be finished for Christmas (.....this year), but it doesn't seem likely at this rate ?
thanks!

Re: Simple Cheap and Tasty, Raspberryade
I only did 5l worth and I haven't seen it bubble once. After two weeks I can see that there's a slight pressure build up because of the level of the water in the air lock but other than that I've no idea what's going on in there. I still don't have a convenient tube to draw some off and measure the gravity either

Re: Simple Cheap and Tasty, Raspberryade
i'm going to dump a hydrometer in the fv as soon as the krausen foowks off !demmeister wrote:I only did 5l worth and I haven't seen it bubble once. it must be done after 2 weeks surely ?
Re: Simple Cheap and Tasty, Raspberryade
I would think so. I'll probably bottle it tomorrow or the day after. I can always check the gravity when I've filled the first bottle
I'm going to do a full 23l batch of orangey stuff next so I'll be able to keep track of that a little better...

Re: Simple Cheap and Tasty, Raspberryade
how about; you go have a spoonful and tell me how it tastes
?

Re: Simple Cheap and Tasty, Raspberryade
Made a batch recently in a 23l FV to 10 l and it bubbled like amd for a day then went quite. Left it for a few days and then moved to near a radiator. Bit more bubbling but not much. Bugger I think I'll bottle it as it must be finished. Err wrong it dropped 2 points yesterday and must have been in the bucket nigh on 3 weeks now. Not sure what I have done different (except double up the batch size) but first batch fermented out in a week. Must be the time of year.
Barely a krausen in mine either.
Forgot to to take an OG but yesterday it was down to 1.00 so is going to be effing strong. 1st batch was about 7% rather than the 5 to 6 I was expecting but this might be down to using Youngs Yeast mix stuff from Wilkos which has nutrient and Bentonite all mixed in.
Mine still tasted far too sweet a few days back so another sign of an unfinished ferment. I use a baster from Wilkos (about 50p) to suck up a sample to put in taste cylinder. Ok takes about 3 squeezes but job done nice and easily.

Re: Simple Cheap and Tasty, Raspberryade
My 4.5 litres of this raspberryade only got to 1.6%...disappointed I must say, I think it must have been too cold in the kitchen. I might try it again in summer, ..maybe
Re: Simple Cheap and Tasty, Raspberryade
Well I managed to measure the gravity today and it's a disappointing 1.050 which presumably means something has gone seriously wrong. Might have to abandon the batch and start again

i put a whole 6g sachet in mine it just seems slooooooooooooooooooooooooowdemmeister wrote:Well I managed to measure the gravity today and it's a disappointing 1.050 which presumably means something has gone seriously wrong. Might have to abandon the batch and start again
did you aerate the "wort" as much as possible and make sure it was atleast 20c before pitching ?
EDIT: i took a hydrometer reading (5 days in fv) and it was also 1.050 as it had started BUT there was alot of co2 in suspension, i think this was effecting the reading ?
i know this is alot cheaper then beer, but if it takes 3 weeks, then it would greatly reduce the "enjoyment" of actually making this as an alternative (to beer).
has anyone else had such problems ?
Re: Simple Cheap and Tasty, Raspberryade
It's entirely possible mine has failed due to the temperature in my "brewing room" (ie the back bedroom). When the heating is on, the temperature sits nicely between 20 and 30 but I think it drops quite severely at other times. We went away for a few days over the weekend and when I came back, the temperature in the room was below 10 which can't be good for the process.
I think I might invest in some submersible heaters before trying anything else...

Re: Simple Cheap and Tasty, Raspberryade
13 bastard days gone and it's down to a meagre 1.040, krausen has all but dissapeared, i drank the test jar and it's still very sweet with mild alcoholic undertones.
there is still alot of co2 in suspension, can this actually effect the hydrometer reading or am i being paranoid ?
has yours finished mucknbullets ? you must be at the month mark now ?
at this rate it's going to take over two bastard months to ferment out - what a [censored] piss take !!!!!

Re: Simple Cheap and Tasty, Raspberryade
I have not made one of these for a few months, actually just finished off the last of them the other day.
The raspberry and strawberry variety was very drinkable, the cola was not so tasty but that was partly my fault.
I think the next cola i make will have two bottles of syrup per 5 lite batch, hopefully more flavour and a good bit more kick.
I think i will visit the shop tomorrow and pick up some supplies. I am gonna make a cherry cider and perhaps a raspberry cider as well, simply by adding apple juice and syrup.
i think i will visit my local polish shop and pick up some other varieties such as kiwi or lemon n lime. This way i can batch them all up and store them away for the summer months (or two days as it usually is in glasgow).

Re: Simple Cheap and Tasty, Raspberryade
I have a magnum cider but the dog took a liking to the flavouring before it was time to add it.
I do have a bottle of this stuff somewhere. How much of this should I put in to make up for it?
