Yeast from bottle conditioned beers?

Post by johnmac » Thu Feb 02, 2006 1:59 pm

There are quite a few bottle conditioned beers in the supermarkets these days. Does anyone use the yeast from these? Which is best? Any tips on how to do it?

I tried White Shield, found it a bit slow to start. Perhaps I should have made a proper starter, rather than just pour the dregs from a couple of bottles into the wort!

Good link DAAB

Ive tried to rescue yeast from a bottle conditioned beer a few times - never had any luck whatsoever. like the link says

Choosing a bottle off the shelf needs more than a degree of luck to succeed!

You also have a tiny amount of yeast that would need quite a few 'starter' to get it up to pitching-rate.

Easy solution is go to a brewery and ask them nicley for some yeast..most are happy to oblige..Cake makes a nice 'thank you' present!
