Brupaks BOTW - Bavarian Weissbier
I knocked up a Brupaks Beers of the World - Bavarian Weissbier last night, and thought that I would post some info about this interesting little kit, as I couldn't find hardly any stuff on it when I was researching what to buy!
This is a 10L single can kit that requires no extra fermentables, but does contain a small tea bag of grains and another one with some Hallertauer Hersbrucker hop pellets. You also get a proper sachet of branded Mauribrew Weiss yeast.
The whole range of 16 Beers of the World kits are designed for the Brupaks BRUBOX system, but that looks quite a faff and there is no reason why they cannot be fermented in a normal FV and then bottled of mini-kegged.
This is what you get -
1 x 1.5Kg Tin of Malt Extract (55% Wheat & 45% Barley)
1 x Hop 'Tea Bag' containing Hallertauer Hersbrucker pellets
1 x Grain 'Tea Bag' containing some very pale Grains?
1 x 12.5g Sachet of Mauribrew Weiss dried yeast
You also get some fairly comprehensive instructions, but these are geared towards the BRUBOX system, so you just have to pluck what you need from the Brewing Method part.
'Place the bag of grains in a saucepan and cover with 1 litre of water, bring to the boil then turn off the heat and leave to steep for 15mins'.
While the grains were steeping I put the extract into the FV and then once the 15mins was up, I used the hot wort to rinse the extract tin out.
'Add a further 500ml (I used 750ml) of water to the saucepan with the grain bag, bring to the boil then turn off the heat and then leave to steep for a further 10mins. Now remove the grain bag, replacing it with the hops. Boil this for 15mins then remove the hop bag and add the hot hopped wort to the FV'.
While all of this was going on, I set about rehydrating the dried yeast. I put 100ml of boiled / cold water into a pyrex jug so it measured 30C, now I added the dried yeast and covered with clingfilm and left it for about 45mins as I got interupted by dinner!
http://www.maurivin.com/media/99.pdf .........takes a few seconds to load!
After topping up the FV to 10L the wort was sitting at 22C and the OG was 1.046. The reydrated yeast was down to 26C, so I laddled about 400ml of wort from the FV into the jug and yeast the temp was now just under 23C, so I pitched the lot back into the FV and gave it a stir and then popped it into my Brewfridge with the ambient temp set to 24C.
They suggest fermenting between 20C-25C to gain the authentic Wheat Beer estery flavours!
This is how it looks this morning about 10 hours after pitching the yeast

Nice job Monkeybrew! I love these little BOTW kits and it's a really interesting range of beers, I have my eye on the Belgian Tripel next, brewed soon to mature for Christmas

Re: Brupaks BOTW - Bavarian Weissbier
I checked the SG on day 5 and it was 1.016, and tonight I have racked it into a clean FV on day 11, and checked the SG again and it's still 1.016, so it's definately finished fermenting.
This is how it looks........
It tastes of bananas and apples with some kind spice flavour or hop flavour that I can't really put my finger on.
I will be bottling it at the weekend, just can't decide at what rate to prime it at as yet

Re: Brupaks BOTW - Bavarian Weissbier
Finally bottled this brew last night on day 16, and decided upon batch priming at 6g per L (60g total).
It was still tasting of slight bananas, apple and some spice.
I will report back in a couple of weeks on this one with a taster

That looks great mate, and nice clear instructions too.
I am going to get into these BOTW soon, as Bazc says to get them ready for Chrimbo!

I got itchy feet and popped a bottle in the fridge after 1 week at room temp.Monkeybrew wrote:Finally bottled this brew last night on day 16, and decided upon batch priming at 6g per L (60g total).

Can't really ask for more at this stage, a small but long lasting head, banana, apple and clove flavours.
It was quite clear in the bottle, but I poured the yeast sediment into the glass

Re: Brupaks BOTW - Bavarian Weissbier
Hello all – forgive me for getting straight in with the questions with my first post!
This beer looks right up my street, and a nice sized kit too 10L can be a bit more manageable than 23L!
Two quick question if I may:
- I can’t see any mention of you adding sugar at the start, only when priming for bottling – is that right?
- Is it necessary to rack it into a 2nd FV? I ask as I only currently have one, which I bottle from with a little bottler. Would it be a problem to do it this way?
Thanks for your help,
Happy Drinking!

Re: Brupaks BOTW - Bavarian Weissbier
Hi and welcome.
This kit doesn't require any additional sugar for primary fermentation.
It's not essential to rack to a secondary FV, its just what I do.

Re: Brupaks BOTW - Bavarian Weissbier
Time flies and this brew has been bottled for 7 weeks today, and even though it is a refreshing drink, I must admit that I am a little dissapointed.
The early banana and clove flavours have conditioned away, leaving a silky smooth drink that just has a mild apple flavour to it
It is more like a wishy washy cider

Re: Brupaks BOTW - Bavarian Weissbier
Couldn't help but notice your the brew colour too - but in a re-assuring way
I've had a BrewFerm Tarweiber in the bottle for about a month now and was a little worried by just how dark it had turned out - I thought that weiss biers were a pale gold, not the amber gold mine were. Its the same shade as yours tho The sample from bottling taste pretty much of nothing tho, so im now worried I've had my first ever brewferm "miss" -time will tell
I think i'll break into a trial sample tonight - off to the store cuboard !!

No, mine was brewed with 18g of crushed corriander seed and 20g curacao bitter orange peel made as a tea and added to the fermenter. Its chilling now, so we shall see....
I used the kit yeast, which from my readings ISNT a weiss beer variety for some reason ?
