First ever glass bottle failure!
I was in my shed earlier and could smell a strange warm vinegary beer smell.
I opened a plastic crate that contains various bottles of homebrew that I have put aside for a mini Homebrew Festival in July, and my bottles were swimming in some off smelling Ale
Unfortnately a bottle of my prized Coopers Extra Strong Vintage Ale had shed it's base, and spewed out into the sealed crate. This brew was bottled in November 2011, and I can only assume that the offending bottle had a flaw in it and must have got too warm in the shed!
I suppose that I've been pretty lucky as this is my first glass failure, just gutted that it was a bottle of ESVA

Pretty gutted for ye, mate
Just look on the bright side: It wasn't a Keg that went west there. And that bottle never did a Suicide Bomber inside the crate.
Could have been a whole lot worse

Re: First ever glass bottle failure!
Lol, I had a similar experience with my first TC attempt, I cracked the cap off of a bottle in the kitchen and it emptied itself all over the cupboards infront of SWMBO!lee1 wrote:hi mate round a\t my pals on friday he opend a edme lager from a bottle it exploded all over his kitchen , we later discoverd it was a dirty bottle ,it was good watching him clean up before swmbo got home , anyway hope all the rest are ok mate

Re: First ever glass bottle failure!
I've not had a bottle blow on me yet, but had a few gushers and kitchen sprayers (Brewferm kits) i've since learnt to chill the first few bottles well before opening to tsest the carbonation levels.
Worst I've had is the necks of 2 bottles cracking while capping them.

It was batch primed at 5g per litre, 3g per litre less than Coopers recommend.Pinto wrote:How much priming sugar ?

Re: First ever glass bottle failure!
Ouch! Thats bad, but as others have said, it could have been a hell of a lot worse if it had created a chain reaction!
Like Geezah, I have had at least two break whilst capping, and I have also had a leaky tap on a keg, but not a broken one in storage yet!!

Re: First ever glass bottle failure!
I always prefer my ale on a hand pump but do enjoy a bottled beer. I would love to say I go to the trouble of using glass and capping them.............but I don't, I feel guilty every time I use my plastic bottles. Somehow it just seems wrong. However I keep doing it along side my barrelling and have never had one fail

Re: First ever glass bottle failure!
I usually make Ale and Keg it, but I've recently made a coopers Pilsner and have just got into making TC. Both of these are bottled in Coopers 500ml plastic bottles. They seem absolutely fine as far as I can see, although I think if I was going to bottle something special and let it mature for months I'd use glass. On the subject of plastic bottles, mine came with tamper proof lids, which leave a ring of plastic on the bottle when you unscrew the lid. Can I reuse these lids, or do I need to buy new ones each time?

Re: First ever glass bottle failure!
I've only ever used the odd plastic bottle when I started out as I was short of glass. I didn't notice any negative differences between plastic and glass and the fact that a huge company like Coopers supply them with thier starter kits must say alot.
I just love popping a crown cap from a glass bottle of my own brew, its very satisfying
As for reusing plastic screw-on lids with plastic bottles, I don't see any reason why you wouldn't.

Re: First ever glass bottle failure!
They say its personal choice - there's no detriment to reuse of the caps, but some people prefer to use new, so they sell them too
