HopBack filter MKii
Image

Stainless perforated tube, with a mesh inside and a new gasket fitted between the lid and the clear bit
Haven't tried it with hops yet, but did a brew at the weekend and it stopped the fine's getting into the plate cooler.
I've also fitted the same mesh to the false bottom, gives some very clean wort.

Still trying to figure out the quirks of the new brewery, Didn't help that I dropped a spoon into one of the fermenters
Theres a strange smell and not much activity coming from that one. I'll see how it goes, but I suspect I know where its going :(

Awesome hop-back. Did you roll / weld the mesh? I've looked high and low for some Stainless Steel push-fit connectors (like on your sight glass) could you recommend anywhere that might supply them?

cheers

Those came as a kit from the states. You can get them from BES, but they don't come cheap. On the first page of their stainless steel fittings section.
The rolled stainless came from ebay. Just drilled one end and fitted the compression fitting with the pipe running the length of the filter and holes along it at various intervals to avoid dead spots. Still need to sort out a decent way to seal the bottom currently have cut beer line but think i need something better.

Nice looking kit mate. Can you tell me where you get your dial thermometers from? Really impressive.

Thanks very much.
It was the states. Life for a homebrewer over there is so much easier. Blichman do a dial thermometer that is available in the UK but I think they come at quite a cost.

I've been looking at these, not sure if any of them come with thermowells or not. I was honestly shocked at how much thermometers are, as i bought a cheap "milk" thermometer for £3 and whilst i appreciate its not the most accurate tool going, it seems to work very very well. I would also say its probably within a degree or 2 of being right and it is very consistent. Its only down side is not having any threads/connectors to attach to the side of a tank. Does annoy me actually how costly fittings are. But i guess you get what you pay for.

I think these wer $17 each. i've looked for uk suppliers but to no avail.

Mine aren't mounted with thermowells.
Make a 21mm hole.
Take an M20 washer.
Slide it all though the hole.
Take a silicone washer or oring then pipe tape and a lock nut. Bingo.

Now that. Sounds like a good idea :)
I haven't managed to find any thermos for roughly the same price as the US ones, even finding one £:$ is tricky.

Postage is more than what it costs itself!!

The waterfilter I used isn't available anymore but a quick search on ebay for 10" water filters shows quite a few, some with different sealing methods. Mine started to leak between the clear and white parts. I've fitted it with a gasket since then and it seems to work.

Barneey,

This is the stainless filter I used. I just drilled the top and fitted a compression fitting to it.

I reckon you should be able to adapt yours, these are few closer up shots

You can't see it very well, but there is pipe fed down the inside and holes cuts at regular intervals to allow the wort to get to all the hops.

Where did you get the band on the base of your filter that holds the mesh out? Mine is just wrapped around twice and i'd like a better long term solution.

Basically I have two different types they were sold via ebay at the time (credit to GarySmif for the original spot) as tea infusers.

It was pot luck which ones you received.

One is a rolled piece of stainless with loads of perforations in it (right in piccy), the second (left in piccy) is a rolled piece of stainless perforated sheet with the inner mesh actually being welding to the sheet.
