pH meter - buying advice

(That's water to the rest of us!) Beer is about 95% water, so if you want to discuss water treatment, filtering etc this is the place to do it!

pH meter - buying advice

Post by BlackRocksBrewery » Sat Aug 18, 2012 9:50 pm

Hello

I really want to know what my mash pH is. Problem is that wide range of pH papers I have been using show a very low ph. I also get very low pH indications of my tap water. There is something very strange about my tap water because it shows around 6pH on papers but several labs including Severn Trent and Murphys tell me it is around 7.

Does anyone know of a good pH meter for home brewing? I know that there is a considerable price range but I dont know what you can get for your money. I would like something really good and reliable.

Best wishes

I decided to buy a Hanna HI 98128 from Radio Spares - because in the UK it was the lowest cost for what I considered the best unit. Bad move on my part. The meter was no good and probably way past its sell by date. Luckily I had a previous meter from 2003 and I knew that any instrument should have a certificate of conformity. My unit from RS did not. I contacted Hanna and they replaced the unit. Big problem now is that if I had not had the experience of a previous unit I would not have known that it was faulty.
Shame is that Hanna now do not supply a calibration certificate showing that the unit is within conformity. WHERE IS THE QUALITY CONTROL today?
