Who is and who is not

Post by DRB » Mon May 28, 2007 2:28 pm

I've come to the conclusion today that i,m not a hop head I, have been trying various bottled beers with the wife and most of them have been to bitter except bitter & twisted, badger champion.Today I tried TTL and I thought it was awful, sorry to all you fans out there, also I have a badgers england's gold to try in about 10min,chilling at the mo.
So who's a hop head and who's not.

It's not just bitterness with regards to hops, IMHO aroma plays a massive part in the beers I enjoy (as well as flavour of course).

I'll be honest, it depends on the time and weather and all sorts of other factors as to what beer I enjoy. But mostly I like them all!

DRB, from what you've said there about your preferences I think you'll probably enjoy England Gold, IIRC it's quite sweet with a fruity hop aroma, low in bitterness

myself I love quite a bitter beer, but with lots of aroma, my beers suffer from not enough

I am a hop head

What i'm trying to say is, it's the bitterness that I dont like much of in beers, 22ibu I think is my limit,as for hop flavour and aroma I like very much.
Just finished the bottle of badgers england's gold very nice indeed nice hop aroma and taste, and not to bitter for my girlie buds.

I tend towards malty rather than hoppy beers.

I like malty beer, but I am coming around to late addition of hops for flavor and aroma.

malt is best imo but i have fond memories as an 18 year old of that moment when youve drunk too much bitter and you go to take a sip but you get that hit of hops that sends you over the edge bleaurgh ! its that pungent whack of hops that tells you its time to go home :D

Hops all the way
Caledonian IPA is how I like it lots and lots of aroma / flavour, or a good grainy stout / porter with just a hint of hops :) .The hop aroma & flavour is something that's really lacking in my HB beers.

Interestingly, Graham Wheeler suggests that English bitters have up to 50 EBUs and Yorkshire bitters have 35 EBUs. However, he then lists a whole pile of bitter recipes in his book that contain less than 30 EBUs.

My view is that in recent history our tastes have changed and Britain's brewers have responded by producing less bitter beers than our forefathers drank. My son tends to drink bitters in the pub but struggles with any of my beers that are above 25 EBUs. My wife and I personally prefer beers in the region of 35 EBUs

More malt than hops for me.
To much hop bitterness sends me into a sneezing fit!!! :(

Useless its really well balanced - ESB served at the brewery is a cracker!

I'll have to go for hoppy beers, really loving the styrians in my TLC-Twist at the moment, looking forward already to the Styrian Stunner I made today.

I've got a larger lover (not that there is anything wrong in that) coming to stay in a couple of weeks, think I can persuade him to enjoy a nice light pale ale.

I go through different moods, sometimes I want malt, sometimes I want hops, my favourite beers are the ones that manage to strike exactly the right balance between the two. I don't like beers that are sweet, but if you've got a complex malty beer like an 80/- or a porter, you usually get that bit of extra bitterness from the darker malts.
