Oooh! That'd be awesome, i'm in the market for a conical, and would like something fancier than a plastic one.

Aye I had a look before (think i posted them in this thread infact) just by looking on alibaba and aliexpress you can find who willis buy theirs off. The prices aren't too bad either its just postage for single items which is the deal breaker 2+ and it works out!

:) if you can get the "other" member to import them + make a few changes to the quality of welds (morebeer quality) I believe they may very well be the best type v price v quality v capacity. Just hope it happens as there should be a market, will also be interesting on the UK source as previously mentioned.

Quite possibly, I think I'd even consider getting another conical. After seeing this (below) on brouwland I started getting itchy fingers and immediately scheming on how to get that past OC Catering & Finance without her noticing. To be fair, once said "other" member has had a chance to have a look, nothing stopping him asking who definitely wants one and getting a deposit before jumping in and ordering.

I was toying with the idea of trying to convert a thermopot into a jacketed vessel, I suppose having one converted to a conical could be an option, may end up costing more than the other approaches. The yeast book says it is important to control the temp of the cone on conicals because the yeast is in a shape less able to dissipate the heat it generates.

I was going to say something similar Martin. I was led to believe that cooling the cone was also important.

By all means have a go at converting a themopot into a conical but if I'm honest, I think you'll be biting off far more than you can chew. The steel on the pots quite thin which would make them an absolute nightmare to weld. Not saying it can't be done, but I think that if you wanted to make one out of a "premade" cylinder, a beer keg would be a better place to start.

Controlling cone temperature is also a good idea however, I think its not that necessary unless you're wanting to go full on brewery style with the yeast. ie take it out, wash it, add a bti of fresh yeast and immediately repitch.
I'd also say that on the scale we're talking I think it'd be more effort than it'd be worth, on commercial stuff I can full appreciate needing to do that but here, a normal coil should do the job, realistically you could just put a bit of copper tube around the cone (which I probably will) to ensure proper cooling throughout.

Good point about the thickness of the steel. TBH my original thoughts were for a flat bottomed one, as I don't really see a need for conical for my use, but the welding issue still arises when trying to connect the inlet and outlet, although they would not need to be sanitary. There is also the small matter of removing the insulation through two little holes without poisoning yourself!! Anyway, I guess this thread is about conical.

I always planned on buying an American fermenter spun from a block of stainless. No weld. They constantly go on eBay for £300. Plus £110 delivery plus import duty. So lets say £500 or there abouts.

Is there any reason why no-one seems to be going for them if they always seem to for this price?

Seems like the best option to me? Are they inferior in any way to the others?

Nothing wrong with them at all, Englishchrissey bought one recently, they look very similar to the morebeer ones except of a smaller volume (moorbeer has the domed head).

There are loads to choose from in the US market the biggest stumbling block is shipping the things to the UK (size wise) unless you buy a few on a pallet.

Yeah I prefer a domed head. It looks cooler. I like the idea of them not having any welds

Cheers

You could get a Blichmann for around £500 Belter which is spun and weldless, but with Triclovers it's like £300 more iirc
