I secondary with aux finings and rack to corny with issinglas. My brews are then stored at 12 deg c in my kegerator before tapping for a minimum of a week, but in this case 3 now.

My first 20 odd pints are cloudy, sometimes with a off tasting caramel hint.
The rest of the corny is gin clear with no hint of caramel.

Do you think the issinglas is off?
How much auxilliary and isinglass are you using in a corny?

FWIW I rarely bother with auxilliary (finings adjunct) and use 1/2 a pint of diluted AllKleer C (it's triple strength isinglass - I dilute a sixth of a pint of isinglass with water to make up a half pint) in a corny. I keep my beers at 12C and don't have much problem with hazes. I use 5.2 in the mash but never had a problem when I was just using phosphoric acid. I also use whirlfloc in the kettle.

Hi SF,

I rack to secondary the full 46ltr batch, in one vessel, with 100mls of aux.
I rack to corny with 50mls of issinglass per corny.
I'll look into that Allkleer but out of interest where did you get yours from :?:
I tested my mash at the weekend and it was about ph5.3.
I've suffered the dreaded haze with both whirlfloc and IM :?

I get Allkleer C from the Iceni brewery - it's pretty common though. In fact it may be the same stuff H&G sell (is that the triple strength stuff?). Anyway in my opinion 50ml is nowhere near enough. Commercial rate is a pint of diluted per firkin (ie half a pint in a corny). Auxilliary I think you're in the ball park.

Having said that with beers brewed with Safale S-04 you rarely actually need finings unless it's a really pale beer (I probably wouldn't use S-04 on really pale beers though as it's flavour is a bit too distinctive for lighter beers IMO)

There's a handy guide at the Murphy's website on fining

The issinglass I use is from The Hop and Grape, the reconned stuff.
It's instructions say 2 x teaspoons / gallon...ie, 10ml / gallon. That's why I was using 50ml per corny.

It could get pretty expensive at 250ml/corny = £1

Thanks for the link I'll go and have a look

If it's the concentrated isinglass then you only need a third of that (90 ml) so it's a bit cheaper. The instructions I've seen say make up the isinglass in water before you add it.

It must be the concentrated stuff

So you're not far off then with 50ml of concentrated then - it's probably on the low end of the correct dose range. I thought you were adding 50ml of diluted.

DaaB made a suggestion that using CRS might improve the haze....well my first few brews without CRS were all hazy, this is the first using CRS in the mash, much much clearer, this was only kegged on 25.05 so i'm hoping that after another 2 - 3 weeks it'll be better still...thumbs up so far. Vossy - I just had to use your avatar

DaaB wrote:Looks like it is getting there. You could try using Safale 04 for the next few brews so you can eliminate yeast haze while you tweak your system. I can highly recommend whirfloc tabs over protofloc and irish moss.

Have a look at my london pride post in the all grain section, I put that clarity down to CRS and Whirlfloc (as well as s04 of course).
Yep, good suggestion, will order up some whirlfloc heard good things on the posts, really chuffed with the difference here already, sooooo much better looking than the first few - cheers DaaB.
