New World Junga Junga
New World Junga Junga
This is a bit of an experimental brew using Junga hops. Not used them before. Brewing a pale ale with these 25 60 mins 25 30 mins and 50 10 mins. They have a very intense citrus aroma. So hope this works.

I'd never heard of them but Rob from Malt Millar was selling them off at the Spring Thing for £1 a bag 100g 12.5 AA. So as you do I picked up a few. Googling them they come from Poland or at least that's where they were developed. I'm all finished and cleaned up. I didn't take many pictures but I did take one of the counter flow chiller made at the Spring Thing. Worked great. Too well. At first the wort was coming out at 15c !!!! With a bit of adjustment of the flow I got it to a steady 19.5. The aroma from the Junga was brill. Tasting the wort it was on the bitter side but we'll see. The hops should balance the bitterness as they are quite strong. Total volume = 24.5lt SG = 1.050. Given that the cold break was in the chiller the wort came out quite clear.
And one I made earlier.

When I think of balance in a beer I think of malt/bitterness but you are seeing the balance between bitterness and hop flavour, is that right?bobsbeer wrote:strong hoppy flavour.

Re: New World Junga Junga
That's what I'm hoping. The initial taste before fermentation was quite bitter, but there was also a strong hop taste which seemed to help balance the bitterness. I know at this stage it's hard to tell due to the sweetness in the wort, which is also balancing the bitterness. I guess I'll find out in a couple of weeks time. I did bang in 50g of hops for a 10 min steep at the end and that seemed to give it a real good hop flavour and aroma. But whether it lasts through fermentation only time will tell. As I haven't used junga before it was difficult to know the outcome. But I'm sure the outcome will be drinkable whatever. Maybe not to be repeated, but drinkable.
Re: Odp: New World Junga Junga
It's new Polish bittering hop, similar to Magnum in purpose, intended to replace Marynka as it's more resistant to diseases and has higher yield of alpha acids per acre. I'm surprised you got strong flavour, it should be clean as Magnum.
Re: New World Junga Junga
I'll report back once it's fermented to see how the flavour has come on. Nice smell though before I chucked em in.

Re: Odp: New World Junga Junga
I've tasted a Junga single-hop pale ale, and it definitely had noticeable hoppy traits. It seemed to have some of the cedar and black liqourice of Marynka, and some of the mintiness of Northern Brewer, to me at least. I liked it very much, but then I enjoy Marynka and I know you don't. I'd be very curious to hear your tasting notes, zgoda.zgoda wrote:It's new Polish bittering hop, similar to Magnum in purpose, intended to replace Marynka as it's more resistant to diseases and has higher yield of alpha acids per acre. Re: New World Junga Junga
My beer is now kegged and bottled. It will be drunk hopefully from Sunday onwards as I am taking it away in our caravan. Kegged bright and force carbed and bottle conditioned. It will be interesting to see which is best. A taster on bottling showed a nice level of bitterness a bit reduced from pre fermentation, but still a nice hoppy aroma and taste. I'm looking forward to it.
Re: Odp: New World Junga Junga
I guess I need to try it for myself, never used Iunga as flavour/bittering hop.
Re: New World Junga Junga

Re: New World Junga Junga
For some reason they haven't been popular, but I found the earthy notes very pleasant.
