Ashbeck in place of distilled

(That's water to the rest of us!) Beer is about 95% water, so if you want to discuss water treatment, filtering etc this is the place to do it!

Ashbeck in place of distilled

Post by Dave S » Thu Jul 04, 2013 12:28 pm

I'm looking at ways to reduce chlorides, which are quite high in my brewing water, and one way is to add distilled water to the mix. However, DW is relatively expensive - I think I paid £5 or £6 for 5l last time I bought some. So I'm wondering if Tesco Ashbeck which is both cheaper and more readily available could be considered equivalent. Anyone tried this?
Best wishes

Dave

Befuddler thinks its RO water and so does the Daily Mail.

Thanks jmc, that's useful information. At the price I might get some to try.
Best wishes

The Daily Mail report refers to "filtered" water but doesn't mention RO. I would suspect it is plain filtered equivalent to passing through a Brita as the report mentions. RO is a whole different ballgame.

I might as well buy mine from ASDA, saves me filtering my own Yorkshire water!

Fair comment. I couldn't find a mineral breakdown on Tesco site.
I'll still try it with Starsan as its loads cheaper than Ashbeck.

I suppose hardness / chloride / sulphate depends where in Yorkshire it comes from.
However if it is just filtered this should still reduce the mineral content.

see info from Brita FAQ
Does the BRITA water filter cartridge remove all minerals from drinking water?
The BRITA water filter cartridge only partially removes the hardness from drinking water. This part is temporary hardness, which causes scale deposits during cooking. It does not remove all of the minerals from the water. It reduces the concentration of calcium and magnesium with cation ion exchange resins, but theses substances are not completely removed as in desalination systems or industrial plants that use reverse osmosis or distillation processes, for example.
