Out of Date Kits

Post by Brian T » Sun Jul 28, 2013 2:05 pm

Hello Folks
Over the last two years i have been extremly busy with work and have not had time to do any brewing to this end oi have about 7/8 kits which i bought and are now out of date. My questions are 1) will they still be ok to use (all coopers) 2)If they are ok what yeast should i use. I suspect the one with kits are knackered.
I have opened one of the yeast sachets and there is a sour dare i say sweaty feet smell so will definately not be using this.
Regards

Brian; Safale - 04 is the industry standard 'replacement'. That should do for most 'normal' eventualities.

Brian; I tried their " Irish " stout. Frankly? I found nothing in it to make me want to spend all that extra on it. Happy with my own stuff.

And, no. I'm having a self enforced sabbatical from stout. Battery of blood tests, at the start of the year, showed me to be disgustingly healthy, for my age. Only one little glitch was my " Iron Retention ".

" Do you drink stout? " Asked the nurse. " Do I?! For f**king Ireland! " I replied. " Hmm. " She said. " There it is then ..... " Suddenly, I didn't feel so blazè and clever. I'd just come through the biggest health scare of my life and I'm not going to take the piss now.

On their 'Dark Old Ale' for now. It's nice Image

most in date kits taste stale to me, so god knows what the out of date ones would be like.

As Ditch says, just swap out the yeast for a new one. The extract should be ok, but I've read that it darkens slightly with age.

What kits have you got?

MB
FV:

Conditioning:
AG#41 - Vienna Lager - 5.6%
AG#42 - Heritage Double Ale - 10.5%

On Tap:
AG#44 - Harvest ESB - 5.4%
AG#45 - Amarillo Gold APA - 5.2%

I take it you're not a kit brewer then?

Hi Ditch

This may not be the right forum for this advice ... but I'd feel bad if I didn't share it with you :? , so I'll go ahead anyway ...

... there are all sorts of myths about dietary iron ... including the one about stout being particularly high in it  ... and the other about how you can control how much your body takes in by changing your diet ... doing that can help in one direction, when your iron levels are low then drinking orange juice with your rare steak with spinach will help ... but when it's too high, then venesection/phlebotomy/blood donation/leeching ( ) is BY FAR the more effective course of action

If your doc hasn't already started extra tests to diagnose/rule out Haemochromatosis (link for more info) (I believe it's particulalry common amongst those of Irish ancestry) ... then I'd suggest you talk to him/her about it.

Cheers, PhilB

   F**king hell, Phil! You trying to Scare me to death???

Tell ye what, mate; This sounds like one for the Tap Room. Let's get down there and get well into this one. Only, you appear to Really know ye shit around this subject. But, let's not waste it on a thread about old kits

Please do dive in there and kick off about " Iron Retention ". This could be on a par with " Kicking The Fags ".
