Fixed sparge arm design

Post by bazbaby3 » Thu Nov 14, 2013 4:37 pm

Hi team, Im looking for the best way to make a fixed sparge arm with 1/2" tube 300mm long. It will be fixed to the top of a circular pot and also used as a handle. What would be the best orientation and size of holes to get the best coverage at 3L per minute. Tried using paint which is not good but i think it gets the question across  hopefully this crappy picture will get a good discussion going.

It doesn't spin? (Unless I've misread) It's fixed?

One of the easiest designs I've seen is literally a piece of copper pipe bent into a circle with one end blocked & holes facing down over. A variation had the circle completed by a T-piece which was connected to the sparge feed.
Your design would work just fine for what you intend (handle) but may not be the best in terms of coverage. Perhaps with a pump you could get coverage like your picture suggests but it would be a bit hit and miss initially with plenty of trial and error.

Trial and error an lots of it. I've gone through 3m of plastic 15mm pipe testing and hoped someone would have the key. I will be using a pump.

i found when using sub 1mm drill bits in plastic pipe (similar to beerline) to perform my own similar trials the holes in plastic were more obstructed by burs etc and when translated to copper allowed a greater flow thru .. i gave up and have been batch sparging since so take the following suggestion in that light.

If your relying on the holes to govern both spread and flow perhaps its worth considering sticking a valve inline to control flow and rely on the hole pattern and number to distribute the liquor only? it will give u more control on the day, as circumstances may warrant a 2l flow with some brews?
ist update for months n months..
Fermnting: not a lot..

Fil, I also found out the hard way with the burrs, it was worse on the 45 degree holes, I plan to have a valve inline but does anybody's know if you can get a circular shape from supplying from one end (usually my tests have been Christmas tree shaped). I assumed that if you had progressively bigger holes towards the supply end then the flow would be uniform!
