Pale single hopper around 1.040 and 25-30 IBU, no bittering addition - all the bitterness coming from additions late in the boil. I usually use an addition at 15 mins, one at five mins and then add whatever is left at flameout, then steep. Simple grain bill - mostly base malt with maybe some e.g. Munich or even a small amount of Crystal. US-05 or Nottingham, or any other neutral yeast that will allow the hop flavour and aroma to shine.

That's what I'd do, at any rate. It worked particularly well with this beer.

Skittlebrau's beer is a great idea, sounds similar to the Kirkwood Station Burst Hop below.

Lucky you. I've been thinking of getting a bunch of Columbus to play with. It was bred in the US, mainly for the big Bud/Miller/Coors boys as a super-alpha-acid bittering hop, genetically identical to Tomahawk and Zeus, hence the C-T-Z called-for in some recipes. So, keep your eyes peeled for any of those names in recipes. However, homebrewers and craft brewers have discovered that when used for late additions it has distinctive, pungent, oily, grapefruity, pine resiny, black currant, profound ganja-weed flavours/aromas too. Used thus, it will turn any ol' recipe into an immediately recognizable American Pale Ale.

Beers using Columbus/Tomahawk/Zeus/CTZ (have you ever seen more top-rated APAs and IPAs in one list?!):
Abita Jockamo IPA
Adnams Explorer APA, Fat Sprat, several of the Jack Brand series
Alchemist Heady Topper
Arcadia IPA
Avery IPA, Imperial IPA, and Barleywine
Blind Man India Brown Ale
Blind Pig: all their beers, this was the legendary Vinnie Cilurzo's brewery before moving to Russian River
BrewDog Hello, My Name Is Beastie, How To Disappear Completely
Camden Town Camden Pale Ale
Creemore Springs Hops & Bolts IPA
Dogfish Head Shelter Pale Ale
Flying Dog Snake Dog IPA
Goose Island Green Line APA
Grand Teton Sweetgrass APA
Great Divide Hibernation Strong Ale
Great Lake Rye of The Tiger IPA
Green Flash Hop Head Red, West Coast IPA, Double Columbus IPA
Heavy Seas Pale Ale/Powder Monkey
Kirkwood Station Burst Hop Golden Ale/Session IPA
Lakefront Fuel Café Coffee Stout
Legend Imperial Stout
Lost Coast Indica India Pale Ale
Lovibonds 69 IPA
Mad River Jamaica Red Ale
Magic Hat Hi.P.A., HiCü Potable Poetry
Maine Beer Zoe
Meantime Bohemian Dark (surprisingly!)
Nickel Brook Wet Hop Series Underground
Plevnan Siperia Imperial Stout, Severin Extra IPA
Red Brick Ale (alert! a Brendan Dobbin recipe)
Schlafly Black IPA
Samuel Adams Dark Depths, Latitude 48 IPA
Southern Tier Creme Brulee Stout
Stella Artois
Stone IPA, Smoked Porter
Sweetwater IPA, Sweet Georgia Brown ABA
Tallgrass Oasis Brown IPA
Three Floyds Alpha King Pale Ale
Titanic Tomahawk
Triple fff Ramble Tamble APA
Tröegs Nugget Nectar IPA
Uinta Dubhe Imperial Black IPA
Urban Chestnut STLIPA

I don't have complete recipe info for all of them, but let me know if you saw something you wanna know more about.

If you've never brewed an American Brown Ale, here's a delicious one. If you don't have all the other hops, feel free to substitute 100% Columbus but prepare yourself for a big oily American stink :)

Tallgrass Oasis Brown IPA
Tallgrass Brewing-Manhattan, Kansas, USA
OG: 1072
ABV: 7.2%
Grainbill: 86.7% Pale, 6.7% Cara 40L Malt, 6.7% Cara 60L Malt
Hops: Northern Brewer, Columbus (60 min), Cascade (30 min), Columbus and Northern Brewer (15 min), Cascade (flame-out), Cascade and Columbus (dry hops in fermentor)
IBU: 93
Colour: hazy light brown
Yeast: derived of Whitbread-B strain, similar to Wyeast 1098, White Labs WLP007, Safale S-04 (not American Ale)

Here's a tasty hop-bursted session IPA your stoner buddies will love:

Kirkwood Station Burst Hop Golden Ale

Kirkwood Station-Kirkwood, Missouri, USA
ABV: 4.5%
Grainbill: Pale Ale Malt + very small percentages of Vienna Malt and CaraPils/Dextrine Malt
Hops: tiny bit of Columbus (First Wort Hops, then start 90 min boil), Galena (30 min), Columbus & Galena (15 min, 5 min), Cascade (whirlpool), Columbus (dry hops)
IBU: 28 (relatively low bitterness, but HUGE hoppy flavours and aromas)
Colour: clear golden
Yeast: Chico/American Ale/Sierra Nevada/WLP001/Wyeast 1056/Safale US-05

Yes, but only a tiny bit for generic bitterness, CTZ is a commodity super-alpha in that sense, then a tiny bit of Saaz for aroma.

i like the look of the Tallgrass Oasis Brown IPA but not sure about calculating the quantities of the various hop additions. any guidance on how to calculate quantities for a 25l batch would be appreciated

For a US 5 gallon batch: 1oz each Northern Brewer and Columbus for 60 min. 1oz Cascade for 30 min. .5oz Columbus and .25oz Northern Brewer for 15min, 1oz Cascade at flameout. .5oz each Cascade and Columbus dry hopped for 7 days.
