there is a bottom drain 120l ss pressure vessel on ebay for £50 currently, well last time i peeked last night (herts iirc), search auctions for 'Stainless steel pressure cooker'.. bet barneey picks it up

Well I blame both you and JMC for my latest purchase, having just sold a couple of item tonight I thought I would throw a minimum bid on this to test the water, guess what no one else bid, I`m now the proud owner (if the seller sells it?) of what would appear to be a large lump of stainless.
Sorry to BigRich for going off subject.

£50 inc p&p you lucky ...
Gas-powered I think, but I'm sure a man of your talents will make something useful out of it.
Be interested to hear what its like.

I`ve a strange feeling that the buyer wont go through will the deal, I stand to be corrected.
Yep it should be gas powered but would imagine it coul be converted to electric quite easily.
If I do get the thing I`ll post a couple of pictures on another post.
Cheers

Heading back towards the main topic it looks like buying the Blitchmann conicals and cutting them up to make the volume bigger is on hold, looks like there will be some 60deg 500mm diameter cones coming to the country all ready to be welded up in to custom sized conical fermenters. just got to wait a good few months for them to get here

The 160ltr thermo pot, either kept as it is with an internal cooling / heating coil or by removing the insulation between the two skins (foam eater) and sliding a purpose made coil in the void, you would need to cut of the outer bottom for the idea to work and make another. With careful measurement the coil could be wound onto the inner surface of the pot, again hook up a cool / heat through the pipework and your very own jacketed 160ltr fermenter for approx. £250 all in
If someone would like to sponsor the idea let me know
Cheers
Funny that, I had a similar idea but was thinking along the lines of working with two holes, one high and one low to create a jacketed vessel. The tricky bit is getting rid of the foam safely through two relatively little holes (that foam eater is a paste isn't it), burning is tempting but produces toxic gases.

interesting,....
so you use hop pellets in the FV which drop down into the cone (or do you rack off a little beer and dissolve them first ?) and I guess you squirt co2 via the base dump valve to stir the dissolved hop pellets back into suspension to allow the aroma oils to be imparted into the beer......
bigrichlock wrote:The reasoning behind conicals.
From the somewhat extensive beer tasting i have been doing the most hop forward beers currently being brewed in the UK are by breweries using conicals. They are achieving this for the follow reasons.
-Trub can be dumped - trub absorbs hop oils
-Yeast can be dumped - its widely accepted that yeast absorb hop oils, removing the yeast improves hop aroma and flavor, yeast can also be harvested
-Pellet dry hops can be dumped allowing multiple dry hops, with previous hops being dumped the conical also allows you to use CO2 to get the hops back in to suspension with out oxygenating the beer.
Are the above going to massive affect the final beer may be not, but combined i think they do, and being able to drop dryhops out before adding more is a def bonus considering the latest research being done on hop oil extraction vs hop contact time.
I am currently using a mixture of a Morebeer conical, 150L flat bottomed stainless fermenters, bergland pots and on occasion a 25L plastic bucket. the conical is by far the winner on all accounts, hence my continued search.
Cheers
