I am thinking about 1042 bitter with traditional hopping (Fuggle and EKG) to about 35 ibus and S04 yeast.
15% rye malt
5% oats
4% Crystal150
rest pale ale and a handful of chocolate to adjust the colour
So would rye and oats go together at all?

Personal taste, but I like them both very much. Loads of flavour, body & mouth feel.
I normally step match when using rye though as it can be sticky.
I should mention that I use cheap rye flakes from Holland & Barrett rather than Rye Malt.
Rye malt may be easier to mash.

No reason that rye and oats can't go together, but I'd up the rye to 20%.DeGarre wrote:I am thinking about 1042 bitter with traditional hopping (Fuggle and EKG) to about 35 ibus and S04 yeast.

Four weeks ago I brewed a rye bitter (no oats) with 20% rye and was very happy with the taste that I took last week at bottling time. I plan to try one tonight.
I'm just here for the beer.

Thanks guys. I'll stick to 15% because I may have a German style roggenbeer to brew also, and I want to start easy -no pumpernickels to start with!
I'll also add a bit of wheat and drop the EKG as I don't want to open a fresh packet for 20 grams or so.

I had a bottle of my rye bitter last night and found that 20% rye was the right amount and it went very well with the goldings I used to finish it.DeGarre wrote:Thanks guys. This beer is still in the fermentor but gravity sample seemed promising. Next one will be a sort of a golden ale to get rid of my last bits magnum, fuggles and citra, 1040°, ibus around 25-30.
How would flaked oats fit in that?

If you like what oats do to a beer, it'll fit fine.DeGarre wrote:This beer is still in the fermentor but gravity sample seemed promising. Next one will be a sort of a golden ale to get rid of my last bits magnum, fuggles and citra, 1040°, ibus around 25-30.
