Brewferm Tarwebier.. Best Practice Please!

Post by WalesAles » Wed Mar 19, 2014 8:07 pm

Hello Everyone,
Tomorrow is the Tarwebier Brew day. All help and comments greatly appreciated!
Stuff available,
1 Kit Brewferm Tarwebier
1 can Coopers Wheat Malt Extract
11gr Munich Wheat Beer Yeast
100gr Falconer Flight Hops, plan is 50gr 5 min boil, 50gr Dry Hop Day7. (Remember that Post Monkey)?
Instructions say 750gr sugar, can I replace this with Light Spraymalt?
Treated water outside waiting for tomorrow.
Anything else I need? LHBS is only 10mins away and are well stocked if I need any extras.
What do you think Tazzy?
Game On! :D

I initially resisted replying to this post as I tend to brew this kit just as it comes. (That suits both my pallet and Mrs Tazzymutt's.) However, a request for a response has left me feeling guilty so...

My usual version is simply to use 1kg of wheat spray malt (a 1.5Kg tin of liquid wheat malt would do the same job) and then brew it to the instructions with the kit yeast. I don't brew it short and felt that adding extra sugar spoiled the balance of the kit the one time I tried it. I tend to drink this as a daytime or summer beer so high alcohol content is a disadvantage to me. I ferment it at 22C for a fortnight then rack into a bottling bucket with around 100g of sugar and bottle. I don't do anything else to reduce the sediment in the bottles as I rather like my wheat beers cloudy. Carole likes hers served bright, so I tend to pour half a bottle into a girly glass for her and the rest goes into my glass, topped up from a second bottle. Once there is space in the glass I empty the remainder of the second bottle into my glass. That way I get all the flavour that lives in the sediment, Carole gets a nice sized clear brew that suits her and I can say we've had one each :D . Result!

My next kit will probably include some dried orange peel added to the FV once the initial krausen has dropped back and possibly a little coriander but, to be honest, I like the kit as it comes and am reluctant to do anything that might spoil it.

Happy brewing,

Ian.

Just an observation matey.

What style of brew are you aiming for with this recipe?

I can't help thinking that all of those hops are going to mask any flavours from your Munich yeast.

Cheers

Last year at a local beer fest one of the breweries poured a higher gravity hoppy wheat beer that was very good. It was hopped with Falconer's flight hops. If I ever get in the mood for a hoppy wheat beer that's the way I'll go. I have no idea if F F hops blend is available outside of the USA.

Hello Monkey,
I am trying to replicate this Brew Rookie was on about.
Do you think I should scale back the Hops? If so, what quantities?
I am not experienced enough yet to differentiate between Yeast flavours and the like. What do you get from Munich Yeast?
Cheers,
WA

Sorry for the tardy response WA!

I haven't brewed with Munich before, but have brewed with Mauriweiss and it gave off some lovely banana and clove esters. The Danstar blurb on their website only mentions banana.

Whatever happens, it will be a nice robust hoppy ale with all of that Falconers Flight :-D

Cheers

Hello,
Bottled this Brew today.
I never use the `F` word because I feel that people who do haven`t got full control of the English language!
I tasted the sample jar and said `F@cking Hell! This is F@cking Lovely Mun!`. Wow! Rookie was right. A Weiss with a Big Hop addition is great! :D
Batch prime with 101.6gr sugar, all bottled, in the Front Room and waiting to be drunk in a few months time.
