Coopers Double-Vision Stout (Toucan)

Post by Monkeybrew » Mon Apr 21, 2014 3:49 pm

I picked up 2 cans of Coopers OS Stout in the Wilko sale and immediately decided that I would brew a toucan stout with them.

I plan to brew it in mid May, so thought I would post up my brew plans to see if I can get any feedback from any other members that may have brewed a toucan Coopers Stout themselves. Even if you haven't brewed a toucan, please feel free to chip in ;-)

Double-Vision Stout

Brewlength - 20L
Estimated OG - 1.060

2 x 1.7kg cans of Coopers OS Stout
600g of Golden Cane Sugar
2 x 7g Coopers Ale yeast sachets

Fermentation - 18-19C

I will be fermenting in a 33L FV, so will try and keep temps under 20C to try and minimise filling my Brewfridge with unwanted spew!

Hopefully I will create a full flavoured and bittered export strength stout.

Cheers

I made a Toucan stout last year.

I also added 500g of DME and 500g of Dextrose which gave an OG of 1.060 made to around 21 Litres.

I have to say I prefer the "Ditch" version, this was a nice full bodied stout but not worth wasting an extra can of goo on.
Mine was kegged and drunk within about 12 weeks, maybe bottled and kept for chrimbo would improve matters.

Will be interesting to hear how you get on.

I will be bottling this brew, so will be in no rush to consume pint after pint in wild session

If it matures anything like my 8.5% RIS Coopers Stout, then I will be pleased. I have also mastered the priming rate for bottled stouts, so it wont be fizzy sh!te ;-)

My biggest concern is still the actual fermentation!

Cheers

Given the right temperatures, mate? I shouldn't wonder that Coopers yeast could ferment f**kin sea water!

I've just done a couple of quick calculations, the theoretical IBU's from both cans to 20L is approximately 120!

I may brew a bit longer to 23L, and add some DME along with the cane sugar to try and maintain a target of 1.060 OG.

I will run it all through Beer Engine tonight and see how it looks.

Cheers

How much sugar are you adding? I am still using half a teaspoon, but wonder if actually should be less...

I crash cooled my last stout for a few days and then batch primed at 2.5g/L.

It had enough carbonation for a decent head, but was nice and smooth to drink. All I've got to do now, is replicate it again in this stout.

Cheers

You know Ditch, i just ove the direct and no bull answers you give. you are now responsible for me spraying coffee all over the pc at work. I did the same when i read the massive stout thread.
I persuaded my dad to do a stout next kit... then saw the size of his fermenter ( 23 litre.)... and said he best invest in a larger one or put the fecker in the shower whilst it ferments.

Love it love it love it. \:D/ :flip: :bonk
