Muntons Premium Midas Touch Golden Ale

Post by StevieR » Wed Jun 20, 2007 4:02 pm

Hi All,

this is my first attempt at homebrew and hopefully things are going well. I've followed the instructions as close as possible and the ale is currently in the secondary KingKeg Top Tap pressure barrel. I've placed this near a cold radiator in my spare room and it is at about 15°C. The instructions mention that it should be stored in a cool room but don't suggest what temp it should be ...... any ideas ?

How long should I leave it before sampling ?

Cheers

Hi Steve,

I recommend leaving it at least 4 weeks in the keg, but seeing as it's your first, I'll modify that to 'as long as you can hold out'.

When you get down to the last gallon of a keg and suddenly realise it tastes 10 times better than when you started you always wish you'd left it longer!

Cheers Jim and Daab. I assume that if the temperature of the room increases to about 20°C it'll simply take longer to clear :?:

I had a snifter of my Midas Touch last night to see how it was progressing. There was plenty of pressure in the barrel, but its still quite cloudy.

Has anyone else brewed this one before ? I tasted it and would describe it as liquorice flavoured and a bit heavier than I though it would be (it was quite nice though :D )

Just wondering if this was how it meant to taste (it reminded me of Snecklifter !!).

Will the flavour mellow with age and with further clearing ?

Mine's only just gone into secondary with some hops I'm afraid, but I'm interested in hearing others' progress. I'm leaving it a week like that, then it's out to the shed for a month.

Cheers fivetide, I'll check mine again in a weeks time and see how its progressing. I tried this one before I knew anything about measuring the SG and monitoring accordingly so I'm not certain what the FG was when I kegged it

I'm really pleased i have a pressure release system fitted though as its certainly carbonated :?

Let me know how yours goes, it would be interesting to hear about the difference the hops made.

Cheers :D

If it's a barrel with a bottom tap, then the first couple of pints that you "pull" will be cloudy due to the yeast that has settled around the tap.

Yes, without a shadow of a doubt. Unfortunately the only thing that can't be bought to aid home brewing is patience.

I've got 4½ week cold conditioning bottles of Midas and they're still slightly cloudy. Yeast bite is still present but am looking forward to it when ready. I'll definately use finings from now on 'cos the wherry that has been in cold conditioning for 5 days tastes less yeasty than the Midas, presumably due to the Kwik Clear I added with the priming sugar.
