Thermometer

Post by Jim Blockley » Sat May 31, 2014 3:35 pm

Hi folks.

I need a new thermometer and want to get a good one. For AG, so ideally one I can leave in the HLT / MT.

What does anyone recommend?

Thinking about it, could I just use the probe from my STC, or would being in boiling water ruin it?

Thanks, Jim.

I don't know if it's good or not yet but I got a floating brewing thermometer a couple of days ago. Really easy to read and in a robust cage you can quickly take apart if it needs cleaning rather than just rinsing. When it shows the correct temperature, I'll stick my probe thermometer in to confirm.

That sounds interesting, I'll take a look. What kind of probe thermometer have you got?

Thanks.

I, and several others, have this one. Certified accurate and very quick to take a reading.

thermapens are pretty good easy to read and fast to react and include basic calibration test instructions..But are susceptible to moisture ingress so no good for leaving in a tun,,And can easily get borrowed as a new kitchen thermometer..

But imho a thermometer is redundant in the tun even if able to give u a real time reading during the mash, the only important number is the temp drop over the mash period. and if your opening to find out mid way your letting heat out and making any loss more significant.. And if u do drop too much the rate or spread of the drop is irrelevant.

measure the temp as u close and again at the end of the mash, if a significant drop i would consider adding insulation to the tun,, :)
ist update for months n months..
Fermnting: not a lot..
Conditioning: nowt
Maturing: Challenger smash, and a kit lager
Drinking: dry one minikeg left in the store
Coming Soon Lots planned for the near future nowt for the immediate :(

Just a cheapo one. I also have an old yoghurt thermometer so the probe gets tested against that every now and then as well as boiling and ice water when I first got it. No discrepancies so far.

I use my STC on brewdays Jim and have had no problems. It reads to 100 degrees and then has an alarm.

Brilliant. The STC probe is waterproof then - no need to wrap it up?

I got given one of these http://www.lakeland.co.uk/12333/Digital-Thermometer as a present. Admittedly it broke the first time I used it but it worked well up until that happened! I have since got a replacement (which I have not yet had a chance to use). The specs say that the cord on the probe is heat resistant and able to be left in the oven or deep fat fryer so when I used it I left the thermometer in my mash tun for the entire mash with no problems.

UPDATE: Tried to brew yesterday with this, its utterly crap do not buy it. Incredibly inaccurate and so I ended up borrowing another one off a mate midway through brewday.

It is, no problems at all.

Sorry for the late reply!

I just dip my little finger in and can usually guess from there. Tried my forefinger a few times but end up with poor efficiency. Little finger every time
