I'm building a new boiler.

I'm going to build a new boiler or modify my electrum boiler, because it takes an age to boiler 25 litres of water ( 5 gallons) . So I was wondering what 'Type of boiler / No. of Elements / total wattage / and boil time (for 25 litres/ 5 gallons, of cold tap water) everyone's boilers are/can do.

Isn't there a mod you can do to the electrim boilers to speed things up ? Along the lines of bypassing the thermostat and having it go on full welly ?

Yer I've had the thermostat apart and made the necessary adjustments, now when turned right up it does stay on constantly. But it does only have one element though @2200 watts.

Add another kettle element and have them both on until boil is reached then turn off one to continue rolling boil ?

How long will it take to boil then. At the mo it takes apx. 30 minutes or so. How long does yours take.

I've got a 27L 3kW burco boiler which takes approx 15mins to bring a full quantity of wort up to boil. Obviously the wort is already at a post-sparge temp so doesn't have to raise from cold.

Peter, I'm hoping to stick an element (or two) into a fermenting bin to make my boiler. Cold water to boiling in 30 minutes would be pretty good in my eyes. A second element should help things along.

As for the boiler, I'm a little wary when I read about plastic buckets and boiling water, but I think I'll just go for it and see what happens.

for elements i buy a cheap kettle (£5 from te*co's) and take the element out
2.2kw for £5 BARGIN!
it even comes with fitting screws and rubber gromet

When you say rigid, are they alot thicker than your average fermenting bin.
Should I avoid making a boiler from my fermenter? Us it up to the task?

I have a few different brands of fermenting bins, and one 'feels' thicker. This is the one I've earmarked as my boiler.

I did the same but with a kettle from Wilko's - £5.

Hum I think I got the timings wrong, it's more like 1 hour 30 minutes to bring to the boil.

is your boiler made from the bucket on the second page second item down?

i am thinking about getting a bigger boiler. i have 2 2.2kw elements and the tap so i just need a bucket. just wondering if that was the right one.

also just wondering do you know if its the same as item TEN20114857 (on hop and grape). just cos that cheaper

Here's an idea iv'e had ,obviously will have to be looked into,but years ago i worked in an electrical wholesalers and you can buy immersion heater elements.,with or without thermostat and they range from 11 inch to 36 inch in length.Maybe with a more distributed heat source these might be more efficient,they were 3kw and use to cost about £20,but don't know trade price now.
