Where to get a biab grain bag

Post by nigebeer » Wed Sep 03, 2014 7:40 pm

Thinking of trying the Biab method but don't know where to get hold of a suitable mash grain bag.
I have a 50ltr stainless steel stock pot, which is 40cm high x 40cm diameter.
Thanks :D

Get a sheet of net curtain from Boyes or any other shop selling net curtain. much cheaper and easier to clean too. I've had my piece for over 3 years now and it is still good, and when I've mashed with it I hang it over the washing line and hose it down. It dries really quickly.
Personally I wouldn't buy a bag, I may get another bit of net curtain one day after all this bit has done 30 brews now. (probably good for another 30 too).

ME too - fiver for a massive nylon voile net curtain, cut a circle to size for your pot (mine is 50 litres) and sit there watching tv while you sew a drawstring around it. Piece of piss.

I've got a voile curtain as well as a proper bag but can't sew to save my life :P

Good thing about the bag is I can hoist it easily with a rope to drain it above the kettle

I've left mine as a sort of square, just gather up the excess when you come to drain the mash, it's simple and it works, no need to other think it.

If you haven't already get onto biabrewer have a look on the forum under bags mashers etc
the cost of purpose made biab bags is quite high but they do take a lot of time to make!
I'm in the process of following this guide and making my own, it looks fairly simple and it'll only cost me a tenner at most to make.

I started with a simple piece of voile, then got a bag from customBIAB. Voile was fine to start with, its easily available and cheap. But it was really nice to have a custom made bag, the quality was tremendous. Its served very well and looks like it will continue to do so for a long time.
Only thing to remember is that it does take a while to get your bag; they're not a pro operation, just a small sideline so don't expect to get a bag quickly.
But they are DEFINITELY worth the wait.

At the moment I am using the Richies Mash Bag which has fine mesh sides and a coarse mesh bottom. At the end of the boil I don't have grain in the bottom of the pot but a lot of fine particles (flour etc).

Will using a finer bag / voile cut down on the particles? It probably does not affect the end taste but I'm just thinking I will have a bit more room in the pot for the boil.

Cheers

I doubt it will give you much in the way of extra room in the pot, but it will cut down on the break material I expect. The bag I use has a very fine (but sturdy) mesh and while very fine particles will get through, it would be a lot worse with a coarser mesh. I'm sure others will chime in to support the Custom BIAB bags.
