Another thought - What type of hose / size do people use with the W & D Drum tap bearing in mind it will have sparge temp water running through.

Also awaiting spinny sparger so not sure if the hose size will be the same at that end as the drum tap end :(

As usual any help gratefully received ;)

That is a nifty little conversion - thanks andy.

I am thinking of using my boiler to get sparge water to 80c , transferring to my fermenter with tap ( very carefully !! ) and then I can use this to sparge from through coolbox mash tun in to boiler so the element can be switched on as soon as covered.

Two questions:

1. Is that sensible or is water temp likely to drop too much during sparge with no easy means of heating up?
2. The tap conversion will be fine for this ( pre boil ) but I guess I will need to drop the brass connector in boiling water before I run off to barrel after fermentation?

The B&Q tubing prices are a rip off, if you've got a LHBS then pop in there, mine sells loads of different diameter tubes for a fraction of the B&Q price.


Having said that, we're only talking a quid or so! But it's the principle dammit :P

With my tap adapter thing I don't use the brass screw fitting I showed in the picture. I got a load of 3/4" plastic washing maching connectors and use those, works rather well B)

17 and 19p each respectively I think. The BES minimum postage cost is over a fiver though :rolleyes:

The DaaB tube-within-tube approach to getting tubing to fit awkward taps is a good one I use it to connect hose to my BLINKO boiler tap :P

The tap on my BIMBO boiler is huge 1" - Haven't come across tubing that will fit that yet. :lol:

Cheers all - Am having problems with the male / male connector - ooh err. The one I ended up getting was not a snug fit at all. I could glue the lip of the connector to the drum tap but 2 problems in that it may not be strong enough and also the wort may be able to get in contact with glue.
So i think its back to plan A and use my electrim boiler which I have already converted the tap ala 2 sizes of hose. My only concern with this one was with the water at 80c I may have some problems in the pipes coming apart at high temp but that would appear not to be a problem.

(I thought that the element was below a perforated false bottom which if is the case and it's not removable would cause issues with cleaning)
How much deadspace do you have with your 27L Burco ?

Deadspace == the amount of liquid left after sparge and runoff.

malty - I don't use the burco as a mashtun.

Used as a boiler and it's hard to work out how much deadspace there is with all the hops left absorbing wort etc. Not much though, I tip the boiler when the final runnings are coming out to try and extract as much as possible

Oops :huh: okay, boiler deadspace :-)

All the Burcos I've seen have been a few years old and the tap was located several inches above the bottom of the boiler, so there was a big deadspace there. I am curious to know if they still make Burcos to this type of design.
