PhD IPA (a red DIPA with a load of hops)

Image

Recipe is for 24L.

Works out as 100 ish IBU and 7.3% ish.

Just brewed. Used 600g of 150L crystal. Worried it might be too much but saw a sarah Hughes recipe with almost a kilo in so should be okay.

Used almost half a kilo of hops.... All added in last 10mins of boil onwards.

Fermenting with some harvested US05.

It's called PhD as 3 letters seems to be the thing for lots of brews and my missus and kids travelled to Germany during the week for a PhD conference today. Time without the kids let me get a brew on.....!

Jonny.

Looks pretty decent that mate, love them hops. What was the brewlength?

Ended up with 24L in the fermenter. Yep - I've got far too many hops (if there is such a thing) so thought I could splash out a bit. Never used pellet hops before in the boil and it totally clogged up my hop filter... Hope it's gonna be a bit like brewdog hardcore IPA (although not as strong..)

Yeah I had the same issue with my last brew. Never using pellets in the boil again. I normally use about 300g in the boil and I thought that was a lot! If this turns out like hardcore IPA please update as I will be stealing this recipe!!

I heard about this technique - using all the hops in the last 10mins from a podcast. It's what some American Breweries do apparently... Tasted the wort going into the fermenter - it was very bitter...! But very tasty.
Will keep you posted.

Yeah I think the traditional 'bittering' and 'aroma/flavour' additions are outdated. I've tried continual hopping in my last brew, so add 30g every 10 minutes over 90min boil. Looking good so far, dry hop when in today

Had a taste out of the fermenter - still bubbling away nicely at 18 deg. Ohhhh - that's bitter...!!! Quite nice though - for a still fermenting, warm and flat beer. Should be nice when it mellows a little.

Been in the keg for. 2 weeks now. Very tasty - sweetish but not too sweet imo. Hop flavours and aroma are insane - compared to any other beer I've brewed and on a par with some of the super hoppy us beers I've tasted. Needs a little longer for the beer to condition properly though. Hides the 7.8% really well. Love it.

I'll have to give this a go, do you still get the "bittering" aspect to the beer?

Hey TC - Yep - it's still quite bitter - beersmith tinseth says 100IBU. I don't think it's quite that but it is bitter - from the fermenter it was very bitter but has calmed down now - and mellows with every sip.
With the dry hopping I put in 2 lots of hops for about a week each. About 100g each time. This might be overkill but I had a load of hops so thought why not?!

Is it on the beersmith cloud? What is it called?

It isn't on the cloud but I'll bung it on later - I think I can just add it to the cloud right??
Awesome you're brewing it too. Would be very interested in how it goes and what you think. It didn't really turn out quite as red as I planned but still quite orangey / red colour. Gotta love them hops!

Just shared on beer smith - called PhD DIPA. My mash efficiency was higher than it is on the recipe - I got about 7.8% from it - upto the brim in a corny keg - left a fair bit in the FV...(I was in a bit of a rush...)
