Turbo Cider - what a laugh!

For any alcoholic brew that doesn't fit into any of the above categories!

Hi there.

Because I was busy and it still seemed to be doing something, I left this fermenting for an age. It was very clear at one stage, though still bubbling. It is devoid of action now but has clouded up some.

Is it still ok and worth bottling do you reckon. Without the primer it just tastes like very dry very stron cider, not vinegary. Will it clear up?

Ta!

Ha! Turbo cider is incredibly satisfying!

I took a proper sample and tested it. It's down from about 1056 to 1001! That should equate to about 7.5% after priming, but surprisingly it tastes really quite nice, dry but not gutrot at all - I'm rather stunned and will do this again as soon as I can. I also have my hands on some Cider Yeast so should be even better, I hope. This was SafAle-04.

So I've bottled it with 30ml apple juice primer per pint just to add a bit of fizz. When can I crack one open at the earliest - it tasted just fine on bottling after such a long ferment (I have the spare half for brunch).

Wish it was tomorrow... ...tell me it's tomorrow!

I've just opened a bottle TC that had a little bit of bottle age.

I used Asda juice without sugar and primed with a tsp per 500 ml on the 6th of November. I have to admit that I was a purist and used Allinson's bread yeast for a laugh.

So, what does in taste like? Well, its not too bad. Got a little bit of a sulphur nose to begin but that soon subsided. Its a dry as a nuns ch*ff and has a fine fizz to it (the way I like it - erm my cider not my nuns  ). So, if you have the patience, stick one away and see what it tastes like at Christmas, you might be well rewarded.

Most of my TC is already promised out, so if it proves a success I'll be making more. In fact Mrs Ade looked a bit miffed that I was only making 5L!

So I started mine last night and its bubbling away in the brewing hall, well the cupboard under the stairs to be honest. not sure which makes more noise more often, the TC bubbling away, or 16 month old junior babbling away!

Yes, my TC is for people who don't drink beer (!) not for me.

Only one bottle left and that's going to some chap I accidentally promised it to in the pub when I was weakened by bottle conditioned Hen's Tooth.

I'll whack on another batch when I get hold of some more juice, this time using my newly arrived Young's Cider Yeast in place of good old SafAle-04. Only 5g in a sachet though, dissapointingly.

OK, I'm going to try it.

4.5 litres of Tesco's own Apple juice.
Tesco's own honey (400g enough, or should i go for the full kilo?)
Some kind of cider yeast if i can get to Cardigan today.

There's a pukka ceramic demijon, for the trad devonian-cider look, but it's at the bottom of the garden and has been for several years.

No amount of cleaning oculd ever convince me that there's no Godzilla-like snail waiting at the bottom, impervious to sodium monobisulphate and it's friends

SO, it's time for the PET 5l squash bottle to take one for the team. This'll certainly iron out the creases

Has anyone any advice about using wine bottles for storage?.
Are any better than the others?. Bordeaux, Rhone, Alsace, bubbly, Port, whisky?.

EDIT: Done. OG of 1056

That should be interesting

4.5l Tesco's own apple juice, 50g Tesco's own honey, 6g Safale04, 1tsp Youngs yeast vit, just to justify calling it a Turbo. Maybe SuperCharged might be more appropriate... 8)

So this has been going along now for just over a week. It clearing, the lava lamp effect is over, but there are still some bubbles rising from the yeasty bit at the bottom. Is it time to transfer to bottles? Or will they explode?

I havn't got a latest hydrtometer reading as I can't see it, the liquid level is too low. I'll have to syphon some out to fill the hyrdo test tube.

After getting rat arsed on Diamond White as a 15 year old school boy I have never been able to touch cider since, until now.
I was up in the loft on Sunday and found an old demijohn that used to house a load of coppers. It has taken a while but it is now cleaned out so Saturday is TC brew day.
After reading all these posts I just dont want to be left out of the fun.

Mine's nowhere near as photogenic as some that have been pictured here, but it sure smells good.

It's not as cheap as a beer kit though, unless our apple trees can be tempted to up their yield from last year's 5 to 200 or so

It's working out at about 50p per litre.

Oh, yummy.

It's quite nice. A bit bready - probably from the safale yeast. I would have tried a champagne or other white/sweet wine yeast, but the shop was out.

It tastes quite appley, like apple juice up front that soon kicks in with a hint of round caramel, from the honey i put in, and then the stereotypical alkaline dryness of cider.

I have added one heaped teaspoon to each of the 3ltr bottles, but only put 2.5 litres in each. With any luck, that'll help to use up the tiny remnant of yeast that made it through, and add a little something.

I'm not sure about the honey now. It might have been a good addition, it might yet backfire.

I have a question about leftover yeast though; there's a pint of the stuff left over, and it's still going a little bit.
I've put it in a glass and covered it with clingfilm and put it in the fridge.

I think i saw a thread about re-using yeast with beer, but can it be done with turbo cider?.

Do you add anything to it or just leave it to dry out on some muslin or kitchen roll, then freeze it?.

Now this sounds like a challenge!!

Well it sounds quick tasty and strong anyway.

Im still quite new at this but im desperate to make a cider.

Please could you point me in the right direction for what I need to do this and what ingrediants I need.

I brew lager, beer and wine kits at home currently so hopefully I have most of the equipment.

Thanks in advance.

Richy, check out DaaBs recipe on the 'Definitive TC recipe thread lower down the forum. That's the way I did it and its turned out great, according to Mahm Sahib. :D

Brilliant - well that one went crystal clear with a nice fizz after being bottled just a couple of weeks. I only got a small sample myself, but it tasted like nice cider to me, not a headcracker at all, and I think the long ferment, pint bottles and using apple juice primer were all decisions that worked out well.

So as I've put a cork in beer brewing for a month, I decided to stick on another TC. Well, it's so much fun and you get instant results!

This time I used the same method, pretty much. Four litres of Tesco's finest into a BetterBottle, half a litre on to boil with 150g glucose, poured the cooled sugar solution into the BB, sprinkled on yeast - this time a 5g Young's Cider Yeast in place of the SafAle-04 which had worked just fine before - waited 15 minutes then shook like billyo, shoved in an airlock and stuck it out in the shed.

Here it is! It's destined for nine spare swingtops, eight of which will find their way into non-beer drinkers' hands and one of which is my reward :)

*EDIT* Had to bring it inside in the end - I'd miss all the airlock action :)
