JBK Own ESB
Re: JBK Own IPA/ALE
ESB for me also, just made the fullers and loved it. Got some crisp mo and crystal, fuggles, goldings . Looking forward to making a recipe from the gods. Great idea, thank you.

Re: JBK Own IPA/ALE
For me, nothing too extravagant as we want it to be easily reproducible by anyone on the forum. I like the idea of Amber to compliment a pale and crystal grain bill. Real British beer!

Re: JBK Own IPA/ALE
I'm in favour or keeping ingredients simple [as in readily available] so we can get the maximum people participating.
For me that means no crazy grains or Peruvian hops which are only harvested on years ending in prime numbers
And dried yeasts only. Slants/smackpacks may be superior but they cost £££ and (for slants) require starters etc which don't seem appropriate for a recipe appealing to as many brewers as we can.
Just my thoughts

Re: JBK Own IPA/ALE

These days I hardly ever make the same brew twice!spanspoon wrote:shouldn't jim make a suggestion? a tried and tested favourite brew? with as mentioned english ingredients, traditions etc?
OK, I generally agree with Andy above that it should be a straightforward ESB with no exotic, difficult -to-source ingredients.
Lets say OG 55, IBU 60, 5% Caramalt, 4% Crystal Malt, 5% Torrefied Wheat, Marris Otter pale. That's roughly what my 10th Anniversary bitter was (except a bit weaker) and that was a lovely pint.
Hops? Challenger for bittering maybe, fInishing hops should be EKGs or maybe fuggles or even a combination. Discuss?
Yeast - I'm not personally that keen on SO4, but with OG 55, even a highly attenuating yeast will make a decent job of it, so own choice would be good (as previously suggested). I thought I might try Windsor, as I intend mine to be on draught, rather than bottled.
Feel free to criticise, modify etc.

Lets get someone with a brain to make the recipe!
Re: JBK Own IPA/ALE
I'm in. I have only just seen this, and it sounds fun. I am fairly new to AG, so I like the idea of a standard grain and hop recipe and then leaving it to individual choice on the yeast. The simpler the better for me.
A classic ESB sounds right up my street. GW's book uses Challenger, Northdown and Target. I really like the Fuggles and Goldings idea, though.

Re: JBK Own IPA/ALE
I'm not a fuggles fanatic, would prefer the target challenger northdown option.
Re: JBK Own IPA/ALE
Challenger/First Gold/EKG would be nice
