Using out of date malt

Post by gobuchul » Sat Feb 07, 2015 3:07 pm

I bought a full set of s/h brewing equipment and the bloke threw in some malt.

Full sealed bags but it's best before November 2014.

Will it be a waste of time trying to use it?

Is it fit only for the bin?

I used some malt my dad bought in 1979 up until 2003 (If i remember correctly), I would use it.

Edit:sorry, I was referring to dry malt, pale malt, crystal, black etc. will stay good for a while, I find the more roasted the malt the longer it lasts.

What does it taste like? Chew a few of them and see if they still seem to taste like malt or if they taste stale or off.
I'm just here for the beer.

I have just finished a 25kg sack I have had for 18 months. If it has been kept well it will be fine. The was no difference in the beer.

Are the bags airtight and is it crushed or uncrushed? Airtight and uncrushed I think you'd be fine. I'd prob bin it if it's crushed if it was me - as my time is worth more than wasting 6 hours brewing a shitty beer. Might well be fine - just a risk.

I was using crystal malt that I bought almost four years ago. Stored in a dry and cool rodent-free environment. No problems.

Nov 2014 is only just out of date. If it smells OK then use it.

Malt that's only a couple of months beyond its best before date is not out of date. Same applies to just about any food product. Best before dates do not mean that something is unusable or even past its best. It's usually a nominal time after manufacture and so I wouldn't worry about it, assuming it's been stored reasonably well.
