Starsan or NBS No Rinse Sanitiser?

Post by Monkeybrew » Thu Oct 15, 2015 7:54 am

I'm looking at changing to a No Rinse Sanitiser, and wondered if The Malt Miller's own version was as good as Starsan?

Cheers

Can't answer the question, but just wanted to mention that I've just got my first ever bottle of StarSan yesterday. Rinsing is so last week.

Hi MB

I moved to using 1.5ml bleach mixed in 1ltr water and then 1.5 ml white vinegar mixed in to that (don't mix the bleach and vinegar together directly whatever you do  ) as a no rinse sanitiser, as recommended by the producer of StarSan, a while ago when I spotted that the bottle of Videne I had been using was several months out of date  ... I only use no-rinse at bottling stage, personally but several bottling session later and it seems to be working just fine :?

Cheers, PhilB

I'll put my balls on the table here and say Rob is decanting bulk bought SS into bottles.

If you buy it by the 4L bottle full it's considerably cheaper.

I have both.

I have been using the stuff from the Malt Miller for a few months with no problems.

I got some Starsan when I bought a job lot of kit, seems very similar, same mixing ratio, so it is possible it's just re-bottled Starsan.

When I finally need some more I would probably just get some from the Malt Miller as it's cheaper and it would be added to my malt order.

However, it lasts ages. You can also re-use it, I regularly collect it after sanitizing FV's etc and put it back in the spray bottle. It will be literally years before I need any more.

That's what I am thinking too. Same as the own brand yeast

Starsan or NBS No Rinse Sanitiser?

Not that it matters, but if you really want to know request the MSDS from Rob. It's a legal requirement.

But here's the saving in bulk.

Buy it by the 3.8l bottle it's 0.88p/ml

Buy it by the 236ml and its 4.07p/ml.

So if you fill 25L bucket up like I do it costs 22p. Now that's cheap sanitising.

Disclaimer: Bleach is cheaper and I'm way off topic.

Surprised to get such a response in a short space of time.

Thanks to you all for your input, and I think that I will go for a bottle of the NBS stuff, question is, how long just does a no rinse sanitiser last before going out of date?

I'm gradually upgrading my kit to stainless steel, so I'm also looking for advice on the best value product for post brew cleaning of my shiny new Mast Tun, and eventually a shiny boil kettle?

Cheers

Starsan or NBS No Rinse Sanitiser?

Buy a PH meter, if the diluted solution is below 3.5 it's all good.

If you are AG then it's s great bit of kit. I bought one from eBay and it holds its calibration well.

SS and cheap oxi is all I use.

An alkaline wash and a acid rinse is an industry standard.
