Cutting #30/300 micron steel mesh

Anyone that has made their own hop filter out of #30 (roughly 300 micron) steel mesh (or something similar) - what did you use to cut it?

My hop filter I bought premade had an unfortunate accident at the weekend, and now has melted plastic embedded in the mesh, and there is no way I am leaving that in my boil, so I'm going to buy some new mesh to replace it.

Can it be cut with regular scissors, or do you use metal cutters? Alternatively does someone want to cut me two pieces to the right size/shape for the right price?

I use tin snips

Edit - wear some gloves as it will rip you shreds.

and ive used standard scissors

but totally agree the fresh cut edge will tear your ungloved hand.. get gloves on.. my hands were raw pin cushions by the time i had chopped out a 60cm circle of mesh..

I keep a pair of tough cuts. In the Kitchen. Great for spatchcocking a chicken.!They are cheap and incredibly strong and will cut through the mesh with ease.
They will 'apparently' cut a 2p in half.

I've gone with the #30 mesh as that's what's in my filter currently. It deals with leaf hops really well but clogs easily with pellets. It seems that #20 mesh doesn't clog with pellets, perhaps because it lets quite a lot of bits through...

iirc the yanks recommend #30 for flower hops and #40 for pellete hops??

Oooh. Good idea. I'll buy a pair of those and give them a go as I'll get other uses out of them anyway.

Trauma shears aka tuff cuts can be mis sold as bandage scissors these have thinner handles. Medtree is who I use and my company free delivery on any order
