To be honest I'd have preferred anonimity but the photographer assistant isn't very strong on the importance of subject matter
Anyway, for the record, here's the brew this morning:

Those little Belhaven beasties have really got to work.
Edit: It really isn't as dark and treacly as the camera would suggest. Sorry, as well, I don't know how to crop pics to a more manageable size.

I reckon you are right Steve - something does not add up. I've plugged the proportions into Brewsmith and I come out with a colour of 7.8 rather than the 28 that they suggeststeve_flack wrote:I'm sure one thing is missing though. I reckon the sugar they mention is a coloured invert sugar as it's difficult to get the required colour without something else other than crystal.

I did brew DL's version some time ago (here) but didn't scale back Dave's hop quantities and got a very bitter result

I do fancy trying this recipe but the colour could do with darkening a little - I'm wondering about adding just a little chocolate malt but the quantities I would have to add to get to a colour of 28 (according to Brewsmith) would affect the taste.
I wonder whether they have either got the colour wrong or are using different colour measurements. IIRC, when I last had a pint of 6x, the colour is definitely not as dark as 28...
Edit: Just found a pic on the web and it definitely does not look the same colour as what Beersmith reckons 28 should be...

Any ideas

So do you reckon my hopping rate might give a better balance? 45grs Goldings 90 mins; 25grs BramilingX 90 mins; 10 grs Goldings at switch off for 30 mins in a 25 ltr batch.eskimobob wrote:steve_flack wrote:

That looks better to me - more like 44 IBU - not sure why but I think I tend to get a high hop utilisation. You stuck with the Brambling then rather than the Fuggles.BarrowBoy wrote:So do you reckon my hopping rate might give a better balance? 45grs Goldings 90 mins; 25grs BramilingX 90 mins; 10 grs Goldings at switch off for 30 mins in a 25 ltr batch.
Will be interested to hear how this turns out. I'm probably going to brew this next although I might go even a bit lower on the hops as I'm not much of a hop-head .

Thanks eb. It's interesting, though, that my Goldings (they were Worcester rather than Kent) had an A/A of just 3.6% which seems well below the usual Golding range of 5/6%.
It's fermenting away nicely and because I've used fresh brewers yeast for the first time I'm really keen to try it which means I'll get stuck in long before I should.

Yep, I have had Goldings (albeit East Kent) that vary from 3.x% to 6.5% - In fact, I have about 1kg at 6% in my freezer at the moment. It probably depends a lot on the growing season but I have no idea reallyBarrowBoy wrote:Thanks eb. Using fresh yeast definitely gets things off to a good start eh!BarrowBoy wrote:It's fermenting away nicely and because I've used fresh brewers yeast for the first time I'm really keen to try it which means I'll get stuck in long before I should.
I hope you enjoy it

Hmmm - just been playing about with Beersmith and realised that I had it set to SRM for colour. Now changed to EBC (which presumably Wadworth are using) and get 15.3 for the 6x recipe when using dark crystal so that now looks more reasonableeskimobob wrote:I've plugged the proportions into Brewsmith and I come out with a colour of 7.8 rather than the 28 that they suggest![]()
