I recommend them - nice thick bottoms! ;)

Do you mind sharing where you bought the parts for the hose reducer? Thanks

I already had the stainless steel female threaded nipple, and then picked up the stainless hose barbs from Angel Homebrew.

Absolutely loving my brewtech 10g kettle. The kettle and the buffalo 3kw induction hob are a match made in heaven:

from noisy and expensive gas to silent, controllable and cheap - just amazing!

Strongly tempted by the mash tun as well, although I would like to hook my herms into it (I know they recommend against it and they are probably right - but there you go).

Thanks for that.

I've ordered various bits from eBay that I hope I can do the same thing with, but if that doesn't work (prob 50:50 knowing my track record) I'll be trying to replicate what you've got there...

Is your hob something like this one?

Looks really interesting. What's the performance like - for example how long to bring wort to the boil after draining from the mash?

It's exactly that one, but I got mine from Nisbets for £99 - and they still have them at that price: http://www.nisbets.co.uk/buffalo-induct ... il.raction. I have seen them sold reconditioned on ebay for 50-60, which I think is a super bargain.

Performance is very good for the volumes I boil, but not comparable to my old mongolian burner (which was a bit of a monster). I get about 2-3C per minute raise for 8 gallons, and I mash out at 75C with my herms. I turn it on as soon as the first wort hits the pan and I'm boiling not long after my batch sparge is finished, so it suits me perfectly. The boil is certainly vigorous enough, but not an absolute raging maelstrom - I don't think you would want to go much bigger than 30l, put it that way. Having said that quite a few guys in the US use smaller models (1800W) for 5g batches, and help things along a little by insulating the kettle (camping mat, foil etc).

Having come from gas I really, really like brewing with induction - no messing about with elements, just as controllable as gas and a nice wide area of heat at the bottom of the pan.

How does the boil kettle perform when draining?

Does the trub damn thingy work?

Have you got the false bottom?

I've got the same kettle so I'll chip in in the name of science... Image

Basically, it's a great kettle.... So long as you have a false bottom. Draining is good, the trub dam works well etc etc so long as you have the false bottom. Without the false bottom and with any quantity of hops in the boil you will get blocking.

I don't have the false bottom. I'm only three brews in with this kettle, but my experience so far has been very good - no blocking, or even near blocking. I have used up to 120g of pellet hops in a single batch, so a reasonable amount but of course one could go a bit harder :) I think there could certainly be issues with whole hops, which is why I don't ever use them (did once, never again). The trub dam does help a bit, depending on how well you whirlpool. My whirlpooling isn't the greatest, but I do have somewhat more break material in the centre than the edges once the kettle drains. Personally I couldn't care less about getting trub in the fermentor - I pretty much drain the lot and have done so for years with no perceived ill effects. Brulosophy did a good one on that and came to the same conclusion.

To be honest I am not sure you could the block the tap when using pellets only - the particles are very small. Even though this kettle is new, I brewed for a long time in another pot with a very similar pickup and the only time I ever suffered a blockage was the during the whole hops debacle.

Yup, should have said, I'm referring to whole hops not pellets, I'm also fussy about trub in my fv ... Horses for courses Image

Yeah - you'll need the false bottom then :)
Fussy about trub in your fermentor? Why? Maybe it makes more difference with whole hops (I wouldn't know), but it has absolutely no negative effects when using pellets.
