Adding spirits at the secodary stage

Post by Sheepy » Tue Jul 17, 2007 4:00 pm

Not sure where to post this but as i post here most often here goes.
Chris the Fish and I are having a christmas beer off, cooking up a special christmas ale. Anyway i have read of using Vodka to extract flavours from stuff like vanilla etc. The question is though as i wouldnt mind cranking up the abv would it affect the secodary fermentation if I chucked a bottle of vodka (flavoured obviously :D ) in before bottling or would the yeast chuck a fit and not do their job and add a bit of sparkle.

Should'nt make much difference i would have thought, if you have 21L of beer and say you throw in 1L of Vodka at 40 % that would give you 22L with an alcohol percentage increase of 1/22 * 40 = 1.8 %.
I thnk the yeasties could deal with this but if you are worried i guess you could add it in a few installments.
I have no idea what it'll taste like though, maybe expt with a pint of homebrew and some vodka in the likely ratio ie 1:21 etc before commiting yourself to the possible ruination of a whole batch.

That one was Sub-Cneifion Rib, its on the left as you walk in to Idwal Slabs (think we did ordinary route as well that day). A great route that is thankfuly quiet as everyone heads straight for the slabs. Im based in Leicester which has some esoteric venues but if i get the chance for a day out i head to the peak district. Do you climb?
