My First Brew (Well sort of!)

Post by beer fortress » Thu Jul 19, 2007 7:26 pm

This is my 3rd attempt at brewing. I tried it about 2 years ago in my student days but both brew were awful, I later learnt the reason for this was sabotage from my housemates. They but mustard in the first one and shook the second one around

Anyway I started a Fixby Gold last night :D All appears to be going well just can't wait to get it bottled and start drinking it. Does anyone have an ideal length to let it mature? was going to stick it in the cellar for about 8 weeks if I can hold out that long :!:

Hey Beer Fortress

I've tried this kit and it's good stuff 8). Regarding getting your brew into bottles, you need to wait until you get two identical gravity readings within 24 hours before bottling. If I recall correctly mine stopped at about 1012 ish after around 10 days in the bucket before I bottled it.

There is a rule of thumb about conditioning and think it's one week for every 10 original gravity points ie a 1040 beer would need 4 weeks maturation after bottling. I found with this particular kit it was at it's best from around 5-6 weeks but was perfectly drinkable after 4.

When I bottle I make sure I do at least 1 clear glass bottle and one PET bottle that way the glass bottle lets you know how clear your brew is and the PET bottle let's you know how fizzy your brew is.

Good looking yeast head BTW

Cheers

JP
