Abbot Ale
Re: Abbot Ale
I remember Abbott from the eighties and early nineties. If I drank three pints or more I would have a hell of a head the next day. I remember reading somewhere that GK knew about this and had asked a laboratory to analyse what needed changing in their process to eliminate this phenomenon and it worked because I don't get that bad head any more.

Re: Abbot Ale
I worked with a guy who was a lager boy. Out of the blue he turned up at my local one Saturday lunch time to try this Abbot stuff I had told him about. He would normally drink at least 5 pints of mega-crap on a Saturday lunch time session. He had 4 Abbot's and was a blithering wreck. I had to put him in a taxi home and he's wife gave me a right bollocking for sending him home in such a state. To my knowledge he never drank Abbot again but he did say how much he enjoyed the taste.Soay4699 wrote:I remember Abbott from the eighties and early nineties. Re: Abbot Ale
We used to have a wine bar locally in the 80's that also sold beer and after 3 months he stopped doing the beer and only did wine coz he didn't want to be just another watering hole for local drunks, his bar went dead, after a month he asked a few of my mates if he did beer on Sundays as a kind of club would they go back, long story short he started getting a barrel of Abbot in for Sundays, and we called the club SLAG...Sunday Lunchtime Abbot Group.
Two or three pints were enough for most and we had some crazy sessions, every week had a theme, lampshade hat week, american football week, etc, if you didn't dress up you had to drink a pint down in one hit, we also had to use opposite sex toilets, if you forgot, you had to down a pint in one, you get the idea, the more you drank the more you forgot to use the right loo, so the more you had to drink and the more you needed the loo! ah fond memories, I may have to make this for a future brew.

I agree, lovely beer. Used to drink it at the Railway, Billericay, in late 70's. Had 2 firkins of it at my wedding.Dennis King wrote:It was the best beer I have ever drank, it was a standard regional brewery in those days before they tried for world domination.Hanglow wrote:Abbott was supposed to have been a great beer a few decades ago, I'd have loved to have tried that one
Had a pint in a Weatherspoons on Sunday (I rarely drink in W's and it was the only 'non craft' beer on tap). It was barely drinkable.

Well played Dennis
Re: Abbot Ale
I do have a recipe for Abbot in the 70's that's reportedly from one of the original brewing ledgers, I can dig it out if people want it.

Re: Abbot Ale
Quite a bit different to my recipe. No hops at the end either, only a dry hop.
Re: Abbot Ale
Yep, this comes from one of my local groups who some have had dealing with GK before and managed to have access to the archived ledgers...apparently
